What a surprise! When I hooked into this fish, I had no idea what was on the end of my line. At first, I figured it was just another steelhead. But as it got closer, I realized this was something completely different…

A Lake Superior Coaster Brook Trout.

I’ve heard stories about coaster brook trout, but I never imagined this would be the day I’d finally land one. It completely caught me off guard, in the best way possible. Moments like this are exactly why I love exploring the waters of Lake Superior. You never know what the next cast might bring, and for that, I’ll always be grateful.

If you’re not familiar with them, a coaster isn’t a different species of brook trout. It’s a lake-run brook trout that spends much of its life feeding in the cold, crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior before returning to rivers and streams to spawn.

These incredible fish can grow over 20 inches and weigh 5+ pounds, making them true giants compared to the average brook trout. They’re known for their strength, stunning colours, and the wild places they call home.

The best time to find them is in the spring, when they cruise Lake Superior’s rocky shorelines chasing baitfish, and again in the fall, when they return to tributaries to spawn in their vibrant orange, red, and blue spawning colours.

More than just a trophy fish, coaster brook trout are a symbol of healthy rivers, wild water, and the importance of conservation. After years of population declines, every fish like this is a reminder of how special Lake Superior truly is.

This is a fish I’ll never forget.

Have you ever caught a coaster brook trout, or is it still on your bucket list?

Check out some of the flora and fauna we encountered at our field camp 2025! The activities you see in these pictures include conducting a lake survey using standard equipment such as gill nets, trap nets, and seine nets. As well as electrofishing, radio-tracking, and camera traps. #schoolofnaturalenvironment #saultcollege #fishing #wildlife #fieldcamp2025
