Maybe not the ONLY reasons but surely a major factor in how oppression and dehumanization and othering is trying to keep, preserve, and maintain power.

Comfort keeps people in homegenous spaces that won’t challenge them.

Comfort convinces people unity isn’t important when it’s actually God’s idea.

Comfort keeps people passive about injustice and consistent with performative justice.

Comfort normalizes and makes us numb to racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, and classism as ‘just’ things people experience instead of actual sins that traumatize and impact whole communities.

Within the world AND ALSO within the church.

Comfort, if we aren’t careful, will become what we seek most and this moves us farther and farther away from being like Jesus who chose courage over comfort in every circumstance, including the cross 🌿

my new book, titled ‘False Peace’, invites us into a different path. One that embraces discomfort, embodies humility, and enlarges compassion for ALL! It invites us to a courageous path that dismantles uniformity, division, and dehumanization. I believe with God’s help and each other, we can create this courageous path!

Comment the word ‘courage’ below and I’ll send you the link to learn more/get the book and I’ll also send you the link to the new FREE digital group guide I’m creating so you can read the book with your church, small group, friends, and/or book club!

Thank you to @bravecharleston for making room for me to share this message with you all earlier this month! 🌿

“Jesus says our lives and the life of the world will be made secure not by defending our lives or trying to hold on to our privilege but by giving up our lives so that the world might live. For most of us, most of the time, that means not persecution or death but the preferring of others; noticing and responding to our neighbor who is in need; doing what we can to bear their burden while we are carrying our own load; allowing ourselves to be interrupted, inconvenienced; living simply, quietly, patiently, sacrificially; not insisting on our own way. We pine for resurrection, we run rehearsals for the opening of all tombs, we trust that love is stronger than death, We glimpse Easter in the ashes of this Holy Saturday world.”

It’s been three weeks since Vulnerable God began making its way into the world. I’m moved by the number of messages I’ve received from readers having experiences with Jesus Christ in its pages. What more can an author ask for? We held a little celebration for the book and I’ve wanted to share some photos and videos from the event but life’s been good and full. Thanks to @andysquyres for being there with his amazing songs.

Many thanks to those who made the event and this book possible, who inspired its birth, who helped me shape its final form, and who are aiding in getting its message out: @godgrrl @stephduncansmith @esteezandee @andreacheinecke @katelyn_beaty @micksilvaediting @ena_labrador2019 @taiernie @daveed58 @skvanderveen @james.r.grace @abadabam @bradley.jersak @brianzahnd @theandrewarndt @danieltaylorauthor @juliecanlis @drewhsmith @debbietanner9 and others who are wisely not on social media.

Are we choosing church leaders for the wrong reasons?

Charismatic. Well-spoken. Someone we want to be like. None of those qualities are bad. But they don’t tell us whether someone’s character reflects Jesus.

When Paul describes the qualifications for church leadership in 1 Timothy 3, the emphasis is overwhelmingly on character. Are we looking for the same things?

📚 What We’re Reading This Month at IMAR

Can Religion Save Democracy? by Shadi Hamid and Matthew Kaemingk.

In this timely collaboration, Muslim political thinker Shadi Hamid and Christian theologian Matthew Kaemingk challenge the assumption that a healthier democracy requires less religion.
At IMAR, we’re especially interested in how faith traditions can help cultivate responsibility, principled leadership and a healthier public life. As we turn our attention to The Anatomy of Leadership, our 2027 research theme, these questions feel particularly relevant.

We appreciate the spirit of Muslim-Christian intellectual collaboration behind this book and look forward to engaging with its arguments.

Have you picked up a copy? What are your thoughts?

Vulnerable God has been out in the world for two weeks now. I’m so grateful for all the messages from readers reporting experiences with Jesus as they read about and contemplated the human God. If the book has meant something to you, would you consider writing a review or giving it a rating on Amazon or GoodReads? In our algorithmic world, it makes a big difference for a new book and helps it find its readers. Thank you and bless you.

Today is the day! Official release day for my new book CAN RELIGION SAVE DEMOCRACY? co-authored with the Christian theologian @matthew_kaemingk and more importantly my friend. There’s no feeling quite like holding your book after years of toil, excitement, and occasionally doubt.

Please consider ordering your own copy at the link in my bio!

We’d be forever grateful for your support and we also think it’s pretty good and much needed in our current political moment. We argue that lessons from Islam and Christianity can help us be better democratic citizens. We’re not asking anyone to convert, but we are asking readers to be open to the possibility that religion at its best can play a constructive role in our public life.
