Build the village, break the empire! We are so excited to drop our summer newsletter. Read and listen at the links in bio. Everyday people have already been building the villages that we need to survive this crumbling empire. Sometimes these efforts are prompted when crisis hits their communities; and sometimes it is just because they see each other, understand the collective needs, and act intuitively. Neighbors do it whenever they lend each other tools or kitchen ingredients. Families and friends do it whenever they bring meals to a sick loved one. These informal practices could be a foundation for viable economic infrastructure—aka organized ways we care for home. In this issue, we explore some of the ways we and our homies are building power by building the village. Featuring poetry by @mad.lines, community dinners, our Alliance for Land-based Mutual Aid, a moodboard from the young folks in our lives, and more! This issue was designed by the amazing @amir.khadar. The audio version was edited by @weriseproduction. If you haven’t already, sign up for our newsletter at the link in bio.

Learn about how Movement Generation is repairing incisions on the land with a restoration technique called #gullystuffing. Through this process we began the long road of repairing the incisions and restoring the hydrologic cycle on the land. We use biomass (tree branches and woody plants like Scotch Broom) from our forestry fire mitigation work and methodically layer it inside the gullies. This stuffing process stacks functions, allowing us to put the beneficial biomass to work on the land rather than hauling it off to be recycled as mulch. At the same time, the stuffed gully becomes a structure that supports the slowing, spreading, and sinking of water on the land and prevents the incisions from growing deeper and wider and possibly becoming a landslide. Click the link in our bio to watch the full video and learn more about this restoration technique and how it relates to restoring human relationships with land. Video by Breaktide Productions 💕

How do police officers accused of misconduct end up in new departments? Too often, they simply move—and their records don’t follow them. They’re called “wandering officers.” At a recent gathering, families, advocates, journalists, and data scientists discussed how the PRAP database is helping reveal these patterns and push for accountability. Event hosted with @kinfolxoak and video by @breaktide

Through the lens of mothers and daughters in three Native Hawaiian families, STANDING ABOVE THE CLOUDS explores intergenerational healing and the impacts of safeguarding cultural traditions. Join us on January 28 at @nitehawkcinema as we screen this incredible feature documentary by FOFIF filmmaker Jalena Keane-Lee! @standingabovetheclouds follows teacher and community organizer Pua Case and her two daughters — artist-activists Hāwane Rios and Kapulei Flores — who have been called to stop the telescope since 2010. Their lives quickly become consumed with frontline actions and court proceedings and immersed in ceremonies and cultural practices. As they face opposition and arrests, they are joined by a community who have dedicated their lives to protecting Mauna Kea. Thank you so much to our 26 generous donors for helping @oaklead reach $4,500 this month! This Giving Tuesday, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to @OAKLEAD (link in bio). As many of you know, this has been a community-led labor of love for 7 years and we’re finally finished filming. Now, we just need your help to finish editing! OAKLEAD follows our community as we fight to protect one another from lead poisoning in our own homes and schools — and confront over a century of environmental racism. This story starts in Oakland but has global impact, as 1 in 3 children worldwide are currently experiencing lead poisoning. The impact of our film is already in motion — influencing public policies and school curricula — but we can have the greatest impact when the film is finished and released! With utmost gratitude, Alex & the OAKLEAD team

On October 22nd-24th we were honored to produce Psalm for the Mismemoried - an immersive installation, at the Douglass Theatre in Macon, GA. For three days, community members engaged with the timeline, experienced an interactive virtual reality film, and shared stories from their own experiences as well as family stories of Central State Hospital in Milledgeville. We discussed how psychiatric hospitals, prisons and detention centers are all a part of the medical industrial complex and continue to harm and pathologize our communities as an extension of state control, eugenics and experimentation. Thank you to everyone who joined and supported this work. Stay tuned for more from our Psalm for the Mismemoried virtual reality immersive in Macon! Three panelists sit on a theatre stage in front of a brown, exposed-brick wall. From left: Tracie Revis has straight brown hair pinned back and wears a white asymmetrical top with black skirt and white boots as she holds a microphone and listens to Cara. Middle: Deitrah is seated in the middle of the panel, looking at Cara, and has a black afro and holds a microphone, wearing a bright yellow ruffled top and black pants. Right: Cara Page has a brown afro and gold metal jewelry, and wears a voluminous multicolored blue, green and yellow patterned dress. Cara speaks with microphone in hand, looking at Tracie and Deitrah, with her left hand uplifted in motion.
