When I had my heart attack in 2018, I read Saladin Ahmed & Christian Ward’s Black Bolt run while recuperating in the cardiac unit. At the end of the first arc, Black Bolt is standing at the cusp of a new beginning, and the narration reads, “Black Bolt has been a king. He has been a killer and a prisoner. He knows he has much to answer for. And if he cannot answer with words, he will answer with love.”

The Roguelike Tavern is my attempt to answer with love. And regardless of what happens in the future, I consider myself successful in that endeavor. I’ve hosted vampire-themed wedding receptions, screenings of my patrons’ films, and a vow renewal for two of my dearest regulars. I’ve celebrated promotions, engagements, births, birthdays, and the the passing of loved ones. I’ve hosted A-list comedians and up-and-comers in equal measure. I’ve closed down the bar with patrons-turned-friends who I feel like I’ve known for years. I’ve played video games with my bartenders in our off hours. We’ve become a hub for the LGBTQ community in Burbank. We’ve played D&D, sang our hearts out, matched wits, and drank & drew. We’ve become a family, and a strong family at that. My heart is full and stronger than it has ever been, and I have all of you to thank. No matter what 2023 holds for us, you will always be safe at home at The Roguelike.
