Introducing Borrowed Sky

Inspired by the Japanese principle of shakkei, or “borrowed scenery,” Borrowed Sky explores architecture as a framework for capturing elements beyond the boundaries of the home: landscape, mountain, light, and sky.

Programmatically, the residence is organized as a linear bar that is deliberately fragmented by a series of courtyards. These voids bring the desert landscape deep into the plan, dissolving the distinction between interior and exterior while allowing landscape, daylight, and atmosphere to become part of the architecture.

In section, the same idea extends vertically. Roof planes separate, lift, and open to frame moments of sky and distant landscape. Clerestories wash interior surfaces with changing natural light, while floor-to-ceiling glazing draws views through courtyards and toward the surrounding mountains. At other moments, the architecture turns upward, framing only the sky and removing the horizon entirely.

The courtyards become more than outdoor rooms. They are spatial interruptions that allow the landscape to move through the house and the sky to enter it. As light shifts throughout the day, these openings continually reshape the interior experience.

Introducing Lightfall Residence.

Crafted from layered stone and embedded into the desert hillside, the home feels less placed on the site and more discovered within it. White travertine volumes above interlock and cantilever over a darker black travertine base below, creating a quiet contrast between light and shadow, weight and levitation.

At the heart of the home, a dramatic double-height foyer opens to a sculpted landscape core that visually and physically ties the upper and lower levels together. Natural light moves through the space throughout the day, constantly changing the atmosphere and bringing the architecture to life.
