What this particular group of lodges within this amazing hotel chain is doing changes the game of luxury adventure travel, and opens a #window to Bhutan's history, culture, traditions, and future plans. Among the many things that make them stand out in my mind are the exemplary #commitment to the local environment and its people (bartering with locals, training young entrepreneurs, curating local artisans); the creation of a true sense of place by using local and natural materials; well-considered details skillfully executed; a resident #sustainability manager for maximum site-specific #efficacy; a trained and intuitive wellness consultant; food grown on property and prepared by a resident chef whose deft innovation included quesadillas of Ema Datshi (Bhutan's national dish of chills and cheese) and red quinoa instead of the glutinous red rice; antique textiles on display from various regions of the country; an intelligently-assembled library (replicated in each lodge so that guests can pick up where they left off). Not just another hotel, this one strikes the right balance between crafted #experiences for travelers and adventurers without losing sight of Bhtuanese #indigenousness. A place where the beauty of the adventure becomes not only about the place, but equally about the journey of the person/people traveling in and to that place. "From the Dharma point of view our teacher, the king of Shakya, was also born at the foot of a tree. He attained enlightenment under a tree, and finally passed away under a tree. Particularly in the Vinaya of the holy Dharma, fully ordained monks are taught how to nurture trees and so on. From that we can understand that planting and nurturing trees are virtuous acts. Moreover, the wisdom deities of the non-mundane worlds, as well as various local devas, nagas and spirits, inhabit trees. That also leads us to understand that trees are by nature extremely important.⠀

It is generally beneficial to plant various types of trees, as mentioned above. In particular, fruit trees provide a living and nourishment predominantly for humans, as well as benefit to many other sentient creatures. They help to improve health and increase appetite, and so forth. So it certainly is important to plant trees.⠀
⠀
Therefore, the whole of society needs to take an interest in planting various kinds of trees and flowers around monasteries, schools, offices, hospitals, factories, restaurants, hotels and residences, on both sides of thoroughfares. In order to protect the growth of whatever has been planted in the best way, people should advise their children not to harm them. This definitely is a beneficial service to oneself and others and, in fact, to all living beings."⠀

"The meditation I use is about calming the mind and focusing on the key point of the wisdom of selflessness. This involves seeing through the misleading appearance of intrinsic identity in myself and in things. The focus is on voidness, selflessness, and freedom. It involves turning back on your sense of subjectivity, your own point of awareness. When doing this meditation, open yourself to the echoing space of your inner hearing, where you hear your own voice thinking silently. Turn back your inner seeing and hearing on these points and probe and inquire into just where this is all coming from. See how much of it is really “you.” Very soon you start to feel a combination of puzzlement and relaxation moving in little increments, toward a feeling of ease and peace. It’s a variant of the “Who am I?” meditation that Ramana Maharshi and Krishnamurti used to recommend, but in my case it comes from the Indo-Tibetan meditational tradition." - Robert A.F. Thurman

"Becoming a Buddhist" implies adopting some sort of conventional identity and label that associates you with a historical institution. Such identities and associations don’t always help everyone. The aim of the Buddha was to provide people with an education in ethics, mind, and wisdom, which would help them become freer, less selfish, and happier. Once they feel better and do better, they can choose their ways of being and their associations, depending on what best serves self and other in particular circumstances. “Make of yourself a light,”
said the Buddha,
before he died.
I think of this every morning
as the east begins
to tear off its many clouds
of darkness, to send up the first
signal — a white fan
streaked with pink and violet,
even green.
An old man, he lay down
between two sala trees,
and he might have said anything,
knowing it was his final hour.
The light burns upward,
it thickens and settles over the fields.
Around him, the villagers gathered
and stretched forward to listen.
Even before the sun itself
hangs, disattached, in the blue air,
I am touched everywhere
by its ocean of yellow waves.
No doubt he thought of everything
that had happened in his difficult life.
