In regards to in-season training, it is important to maintain qualities you’ve gained in the off-season as well as monitor and limit fatigue.

As an athlete, the top priority is to be feeling and performing your best every game. If you’re going into games sore or tired from lifts during the week, you’re probably not setting yourself up for success.

As a strength coach, we can limit fatigue in 2 ways.

1. Volume
2. Range of motion

Limiting Volume can be as simple as keeping the sets and reps low while keeping intensities high.

Limiting range of motion can be changed in a multitude of ways.

A basic way to limit ROM is using set parameters like only going down to 90 degrees or using constraints like the floor on a floor press or a box on a box squat.

Another way to limit ROM is by using unilateral exercises.

Take DB Bench for example.

Anatomy: The pecs originate mainly at the sternum and insert on to the humerus.

When performing a normal DB bench, the sternum stays centered while each humerus moves away from the midline putting the pecs in a more lengthened position.

When performing a SA DB Bench, the rib cage slightly rotates towards whatever side is holding the DB. This creates less separation between the sternum and humerus leading to less lengthening of the pecs.

There is a time and a place for bilateral lifts in season along w/ full range of motion lifts. Corey Schlesinger mentions:
stiffness/shorter ROM=performance
compliance/full ROM=health

These are just a few things to consider when in-season programming.
