PERFECT PAIR • EP.003

Some actors share the screen.

Others make you forget you’re watching a movie.

Billy Dee Williams and Diana Ross brought elegance, romance and old-school star power.

Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan gave us a love story that felt natural, vulnerable and completely real. Btw s/o to te Queen @gpbmadeit for creating an absolute classic. 🫶🏾👏🏾

But Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett created something different… raw, complicated and impossible to look away from.

This isn’t about the strongest individual performance.

It’s about what happened when they stood across from each other.

That performance was just UNREAL!!!!! They both got robbed at the Academy Awards. Still to this day one of the most incomprehensible upset of the History of the Oscars… but again this is just my opinion.

My verdict: Laurence Fishburne × Angela Bassett.

Now it’s your turn…

Who had the greatest on-screen chemistry?

UP LATE NIGHT I HOLBURNE MUSEUM I BATH

Last night I was delighted to attend the fifth Up Late event by Emerge Studio and experience The Holburne Museum after hours, with works curated by the artists in residence at Emerge Studios in Bath.

Reflecting Emerge’s ethos as a multi-disciplinary studio, this special edition brings together local emerging artists across the visual arts and I was so pleased to see artists that I have been able to interact with recently as a mentor and support their practices.

Art, creativity and community come together in these relaxed late-night social events that transforms the museum into a space for experimentation, exchange and new perspectives.

It is wonderful to see the juxtaposition of contemporary art within the Holburne historic collection! This type of collaboration is an exciting concept. Here is a selection of some of the works in the exhibition. Congratulations to all the participants for a sensitive and engaging curation.

The cover comes from Brian Gibson, the winner of our Open Exhibition ✨ Taking inspiration from one of his favourite albums, Talking Head’s 77, Brian created this wonderful cover featuring his winning piece Hands Across The Sea. The Open Exhibition is open until January 10th, so if you haven’t already be sure to pop in and take a look.

Congratulations to Bath based artist Brian Gibson, the winner of TOTH Open Exhibition prize. Brian wins a commission fee of £450 to support the production of Celebrate magazine’s December cover.

The award winning work Hands Across The Sea was created earlier this year during a micro-residency at Bath Spa University. It is made from graphite rubbed onto an antique pianola roll. Music is integral to Brian’s practice and he describes this work as having ‘three different rhythms - that of the coded score sheet, my mark making and the piano music itself’.

The prize was selected by TOTH director Tom Maddicott and Head of Outreach Tessa Slack. They felt the work would make a great cover image. “The detail in Brian’s piece really stood out and we especially liked the musical connection. So excited to see how it will look on the cover of Celebrate!”

The Open Exhibition will be displayed in the gallery until January 10th. Be sure to come down and take a look.

If I'm honest I think a lot of these new wave punk bands are a bit rubbish!
