At 10 years old, I walked through the gates of Woodward West with a skateboard three times my size.

From the very beginning, @nysecretweapon and @pamelavelasquez created a place that felt like family. I quickly learned the simple lessons, like how to stop pushing mongo (thank you @timothyward @buzzysullivan @brianjskates). But what stood out most was the feeling of being surrounded by people who wanted you to succeed. that’s what made this place different.

Over the years, Woodward West took me from camper, to D12, to junior staff, to staff, and eventually to visiting pro. Along the way, I gained new skills, collected more than a few outstanding camper awards, and most importantly, I gained people who became family. I’ll never forget calling the cheer and gym staff @clairee_oconnell_ “mom” and @jackkkkatttack “nana,” or spending way too much time in the athletic trainer room with concussions, broken bones, and red bands (my knees hips ankles everything is paying for it now at age 23🧍‍♀️)

The staff and instructors made the biggest impact. @amandast935 @thekinneykrew @krisleesherry @dustin_t_orem @buzzysullivan @timothyward @brianjskates @spencerkrauss @el__lobo___ @jimmyjamsimi and so many others, you showed me what it meant to be an instructor.
At 15 I had no idea what I was doing but filling up Gatorade/Powerade each summer and with the hope that one day I would land that dang cave man in. you all taught me that skateboarding is a community and it needs space for everyone.

I loved my time at West. being a counselor, being an instructor, being a camper, and making lifelong friends.

That intention, the way the community was built, is what made my summers at Woodward West priceless. 🖤💛

Went up to Mt. Hood for a fun weekend of skating and camping with @boardhousebend and some of the crew! Here’s what I captured on my phone from my 30 hours on the trip. Thanks for having us @seekskatecamp

Another @slowimpactaz in the books! Such a fun and thought provoking weekend. Big thanks to @ryan_lay for organizing and all the folks behind the scenes making it function smoothly. And a giant thanks to @timothyward for letting @skateafterschool be our club house and lending bikes to so many people.

I brought my 18 year old digital camera along this year and got some really fun shots. I could probably fill several posts with photos from the Van Decks Parks show. I maxed out the tags on those shots. Haha.

So much talk about community building this year. I’m excited to build on that. Especially the stuff @wetdenim presented in his paper session.

See you next year!
