I got the chance this past week to meet a very nice young man. Unfortunately, because of unhealed trauma, I didn’t give things the chance they deserved. Unlearning a lifetime of fight-or-flight responses is incredibly hard.

I’ve done a lot of healing in silence over the years, and I truly believed I had come much further than I actually had. This experience showed me that I still have work to do.

A good friend reminded me that healing also means taking accountability. I can’t keep deflecting or placing the blame on my past. My trauma may explain some of my reactions, but it doesn’t excuse hurting someone who has done nothing wrong. That was a difficult truth to accept, but it’s one I needed to hear.

We all have a story. We all have a past. Some of us have survived trauma that most people could never imagine or fully understand. But healing is our responsibility.

I want to be loved deeply. I’m a Cancer, and loving with my whole heart has always come naturally to me. But I can’t expect someone to love me in a healthy way if I’m allowing my trauma to control how I show up in relationships.

So, I’m choosing to get back on my healing journey—not because I’m broken, but because I want to become the healthiest version of myself. My hope is that when the next special person comes into my life, I’ll be able to meet them with peace instead of fear, trust instead of survival, and love instead of self-protection.

Healing isn’t a straight line, and this setback doesn’t erase how far I’ve come. It simply reminds me that growth is ongoing. This chapter isn’t the end of my story—it’s another step toward becoming the person I know I’m capable of being.
