On Wednesday night, @missskat_, @abaforewa, @dailyraay and I had a GNO at the Newark Arts Festival exhibition and opening reception. To say that we needed this would be an absolute UNDERSTATEMENT. To immerse ourselves in art while basking in sisterhood is a top tier activity for us.

The vibes were high (all pun intended), my laughter had me on the verge of tears, and at several points I just looked at my friends in equal parts awe and appreciation. How blessed am I to have this kind of love to return home to? The only one missing out of The Jersey Girls was @egyptactually, but we held her down in spirit.

Towards the end of our time at the exhibit, Raven looked at all of us and said that the night felt like an episode of Insecure, and that couldn’t have been more accurate. Lol. We then debated what we’d call the episode if it really existed. I don’t think we ever came to an agreement between “Art Heauxs” (my choice) and “Bitches Love Art.” But idgaf what the night ends up being called, as long as I get to have a million more with these baddies by my side. 🥹💕

***This carousel features some of my fave pieces from the exhibit. I was incredibly proud of the display, even more proud of Newark, and just elated to be in the company of so many talented and intriguing people. Reuniting with the incomparable @briblvck was ALSO a plus!***

Jerry Gant shares his thoughts:

“Outside of the capitalist mindset, an entirely different conversation begins. We’ve become so accustomed to the McDonald’s model—the McBuildings, the bright lights, the systems designed to keep everything moving—that we rarely stop to question it. The machinery of capitalism is a well-oiled machine. It runs so smoothly that, unless you slow down to break it apart and examine it, its presence becomes normalized. That’s the unsettling part: we begin to mistake what we’ve adapted to for what is natural. And that’s why art matters. Art that exists outside of capital invites us to see differently, to question differently, and to imagine that another way of being is possible.” #jerrygant #tartw #newarknj #art
