Can you believe @torontowots was three weeks ago? We are still are not over the great times we had with so many wonderful book and magazine pals! The panels, the workshops, the totebags, the teetering to-read pile! Not to mention the conversations, the laughs, the hugs, the amazing stuff sold and purchased and read in the sunshine. Thank you for a perfect weekend, WOTS team—only 49 more weeks until next time! #magazines #magazinepeople #bookpeople #readingpeople #gettingtogether #somuchfun #recentnostalgia

Anne Carson won the Nobel Prize for Literature and it sent me on a nostalgia trip. From our shared alma mater, to her many contributions to the literary magazine that I volunteer at, to the copies of her books that I’ve always spotted at the secondhand bookshelves around campus, it has never occurred to me how her presence has quietly been around me throughout my adult life. Because her work has always been in my periphery and I don’t have any background in the classics, I’ve always said “maybe one day.” I suppose that day is nigh; I’m looking forward to deepening my understanding of this hometown heroine 🤎 Works mentioned: - “Classic Carson,” Val Ross, University of Toronto Magazine - “The Family Wedding, A Radio Play,” Anne Carson, Brick 110 (Thank you @brickliterary for publishing several pieces that introduced me to her work!)

Room magazine is urgently fundraising to continue running our organization. For over 50 years, our small nonprofit has carved out a space in “Canadian”literary publishing where underrepresented voices can thrive. We publish work by people of all marginalized genders, making a special effort to centre BIPOC, queer, and disabled voices, with longstanding partnerships with @indigenousbrilliance and @unboundreadingseries. We are committed to solidarity with global struggles against imperialism and capitalist extraction. To date, we’ve published over 2,500 writers from marginalized communities, organized over 500 literary events, and published almost 200 issues of our magazine. Unfortunately, our staff have been facing enormous strain since 2025 due to a key staff member’s sudden departure. This difficult transition period required us to pause operations, which included printing issues, processing submissions, applying for grants, reconciling accounts, and conducting other vital operational activities. The events of 2025, and the mismanagement leading up to it, puts Room’s survival at risk in a way that cannot be resolved without community support. We are struggling, with staff working unpaid overtime and at great personal detriment, taking on large amounts of work that are outside of their job descriptions, to keep the lights on. Given the recent shutdowns of feminist publishers like Jezebel and Bitch Media, feminist literature is more crucial than ever, especially in times of rising fascism and book bans. Room is one of the most integrally diverse spaces in “Canadian” publishing today, and we need your help to keep it that way. Please check out our galabid fundraiser, featuring generous donations by beloved presses, writers, artists, arts and culture organizations, and more. We know $80k may sound like a huge sum, but if each of our 28k followers donated $5, we would meet our goal immediately. We know, too, that times are hard for everyone—we’re far from the only ones fundraising—and appreciate every bit you’re able to spare. In solidarity, Room

👇Read the story beyond the page… Fallout—Chernobyl and Pripyat, Ukraine by Robin Gittens A #poem (sonnet) from my manuscript movement: ‘Those Dark Places’ where I unearth the lingering #trauma that haunts (or lingers) across global locales. Who remembers the world’s worst nuclear accident and the abandoned town as a result? I’m talking about the fallout from reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl plant, which exploded on April 26, 1986, during a botched safety test near the city of Pripyat—home to about 49,000 people—which was evacuated within 36 hours and never resettled. Does man ever truly learn from his hubris? I like to write deliciously dark poems with themes of grief, heritage, identity, stigma, social injustice, gothic #horror, childhood trauma, and albinism. What creative mediums do you use to heal your trauma and reclaim your voice and spirit? Check the link in my bio. Like, follow and stay tuned for more! NB: AI was NOT used to pen/create this poem, or any other. The cover image, however, is indeed an AI interpretation of my work. @poetryfoundation @poetsorg @paul.edward.costa

👇Learn more: read the caption... A Foreboding Fire by Robin Gittens A short #poem influenced by the ongoing woes impacting today’s education system, i.e. the trauma (emotional and psychological) educators/teachers endure in pursuit of their passion. After watching the videos and reading the articles/posts, how can we as a society ignore the wildfire of chaos they face the moment they step into their classrooms? The job of a Teacher is to do just that... SHARE. TEACH. EDUCATE. They are not here to parent YOUR child. There needs to be a greater level of respect, awareness and ACTION against today’s lack of accountability and responsibility. I am forever thankful for all the educators who taught me the skills to chase my dream of becoming a published poet and inspire those of a like-mind. I write #poetry to confront and heal trauma—how do you confront yours? Check the link in my bio! Like and follow for more! NB: AI was NOT used to pen/create this poem, or any other. The images, however, are AI interpretations of my work. #teachersofinstagram #classroommanagement teacherburnout
