Bricks for the Blind is such an incredible resource that’s making LEGO building more accessible for people who are blind or visually impaired.

They take traditional LEGO instruction booklets, which rely almost entirely on pictures, and convert them into detailed text-based instructions that can be read with a screen reader or braille display. This allows blind builders to independently follow along, identify the correct pieces, and complete official LEGO sets without having to rely on someone else to interpret the visual instructions.

If you’re interested in trying it yourself, it’s easy to get started. Simply visit the Bricks for the Blind website, search for the LEGO set you’re building, and download the accessible instructions if they’re available. Their library continues to grow as more sets are added, making it a fantastic resource for LEGO fans of all ages.

Resources like this are a great reminder that accessibility doesn’t always require reinventing a product—it can be as simple as making the instructions accessible so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the same experience. The MenoLug brick is not, as I thought at first glance, for those of us who were friends with Joe Meno, but rather for those in peri-menopause or menopause. 😅 I'm not sure who made those as a friend who's already tagged here gave me mine.

For blind and visually impaired kids, building a Lego set independently is a window into the world.

Matthew Shifrin and his organization, @bricks4theblind, have adapted over 550 Lego sets for blind and visually impaired builders across more than 120 countries — all available for free.

In our latest episode of Through Our Eyes, Matthew shares the story behind Bricks for the Blind, what it really means for a blind child to complete a Lego set independently, and how it builds joy, confidence, and learning.

What do you have? What do you need? Last week, Think Outside the VOX and Roxbury International Film Festival hosted the first VOX n’ ROX CARE Fair: Collective Action Resource Exchange Fair. Born from the work by arts administrators and community leaders cultivated in the Barr Foundation cohorts/peer exchange groups, CARE Fair fostered space to activate and organize generosity. Much gratitude to the participants for candidly sharing their needs and assets. We are stronger when we work together! We completed a site review with Boston Comics of Color and had a great time doing it! VOX is accepting applications for consultation, site reviews, facilitations - we offer these services and more.
