Here’s a couple of pictures from our biggest Bridges concert of the year which took place last week at Karlstorbahnhof with over 180 guests!

As always, I’m proud of our students, proud of our tireless team and just generally proud of what Bridges has achieved so far 🙌🏽

Thank you, Zhiqian Xu @zq_with_camera for the photos!

I am honored to be a speaker at the upcoming MUSICONNEX conference, which will take place from 22 to 24 of September!

Originally I was very excited to travel to Jyväskylä, Finland, but alas, that did not pan out… Instead I will be presenting online.

I will be reporting on two core aspects of our work at Bridges: our thinking around trauma and our thinking around community music therapy. In fact, we had two Bachelor’s students write their thesis on these topics, so I will also be sharing a bit of their work.

Looking forward to it!

I had the opportunity to present the oral presentation “A Trauma-Informed Music-Based Model for Displaced Youth: Conceptual Foundations from the Bridges Project” together with Katja Stellberg at the World Congress of Music Therapy.

Our presentation introduced the Bridges Trauma Concept, a framework developed to guide music-based work with children and young people with refugee backgrounds living in collective accommodation in Germany. Drawing on trauma theory, neurobiology, clinical experience, supervision, and ongoing team reflection, the model provides a trauma-informed foundation for the project’s work across different settings.

We discussed how the framework informs the four interconnected components of the Bridges project: low-threshold music therapy groups with emotion-regulation elements, individual instrumental lessons, collaborative band workshops, and transcultural community concerts. We also explored how these principles support safety, emotional regulation, co-regulation, participation, and identity development through music, while highlighting the importance of adapting trauma-informed practice to the specific social, cultural, and geographical contexts in which young people live.

I am grateful for the thoughtful questions and conversations that followed the presentation, and for the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on trauma-informed music therapy with displaced communities.

Learned so much from a World Café on “Centering Ethics in Community Music therapy - Lessons from the Bridges Project” which I had the honor of putting together with Prof. Doug Keith, Dr. Debbie Bates and Prof. Alexander Wormit (who was not able to be there in person).

We talked about topics that often come up in CoMT projects, such as:

1. What do we do when the needs of CoMT participants exceed the scope of our role?
2. Performance is often an aspect of community projects. What are the ethical questions around performances in community music projects, and how do we navigate them?
3. What support resources do community music therapists need to practice ethically and to increase ethical awareness?
4. Do ethics look different in CoMT than clinical music therapy? If so, how?

We got a lot of great feedback from the participants! What’s great is that this can be directly implemented in our Bridges project.

Do you have any thoughts on this topic?

Happy to share that our abstract from the Bridges Project at SRH University, “Bridging Practice and Theory: Community Music Therapy and Trauma-Informed Approaches in Work with Displaced Youth” was accepted for presentation at the MUSICONNEX conference held at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, on 22 - 24 September 2026!

By linking Bridges to international discussions on community-oriented and trauma-informed music therapy, this presentation calls for stronger theoretical clarity and cross-contextual dialogue to advance the field and guide future community-based work with displaced persons.

Who else will be joining in Finland?

( Bild 4)

We are honoured to have been invited to give a talk at SRH University Heidelberg on our co-edited book, Music Therapy with Displaced Persons.

This book addresses and responds to the forced displacement crisis by exploring how music and music therapy can assist people in a range of of settings around the globe. It offers a further understanding of practice and the opportunity to stimulate critical exploration of this area of work.

You can join us on April 20th in Room 1.02 at Maria Probst Straße 3 from 17:00 to 18:00.

This year at Bridges has been absolutely crazy! At the beginning of the year, we heard that the project had been awarded funds from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) from the European Union (over 600,000 euros over 3 years).

These few photos were from one of the highlights of the year, the concert at Karlstorbahnhof where the kids (and us in the team) got to perform in front of a live audience. Follow Bridges’ official account (@bridgesmusik) for more details about what we do and to get to know all the great people involved!

Thank you, Florian Hölzel, for the great photos! @flowhance_photography
