Continuing my recap of my recent Santa Fe Workshop, day 3: Jennifer Schlessinger welcomed our class to her new space OBSCURA GALLERY. This new space opened to the public just weeks ago with a 5-person Exhibition “Limelight,” a nod to the late great pioneering Helen Gee (1919-2004) whose coffee shop / photography gallery “Limelight” located in New York’s Greenwich Village active from@1954 to 1961 was one of the first post-war establishments to sell fine photographs by those we now consider our modern masters. Her memoir “Limelight: A Greenwich Village Photography Gallery and Coffeehouse in the Fifties : a Memoir” was published by UNM Press in 1997; you see a copy of it here. In this inaugural exhibition Jennifer showcases 5 talented women artists, each one an inspiration! #susanburnstine #brigittecarnochan #cocofronsac #alinesmithson #joycetenneson Visit this exhibition on her website and visit this beautiful space as often as you can, in person, at art fairs or online to continue to be inspired! FYI: Helen Gee’s Archive containing 50 boxes of papers and correspondence is housed at the Center for Creative Photography on the University of Arizona Campus; you can find a detailed “Finding aid for the Helen Gee / Limelight Gallery Archive, 1919-2004 AG 74” www.ccp.arizona.edu/collections/research-archives and go to Finding Aids (page 2, GEE and Click open the PDF. So interesting! #helengeelimelightgallery #helengee @cntrforcreativephoto @aipadphoto

LIMELIGHT, celebrates five pioneering contemporary female artists each debuting brand new work or work never before exhibited in New Mexico. Included in the exhibition are Susan Burnstine, Brigitte Carnochan, Coco Fronsac, Aline Smithson, and Joyce Tenneson. . . The exhibition is inspired by and celebrates the late New York Greenwich Village pioneering gallerist Helen Gee and her gallery, Limelight, started in 1954. Gee’s gallery was the first successful and enduring exhibition space devoted exclusively to selling photography during the post Second World War era in New York. Gee’s memoir, Helen Gee: Limelight, a Greenwich Village Photography Gallery and Coffeehouse in the Fifties, was recently published by Aperture as an e-book and was originally published by University of New Mexico Press in 1997. . . #limelight #helengee #finephotography #santagegallery #susanburnstine #brigittecarnochan #cocofronsac #alinesmithson #joycetenneson #female #pioneeringphotographers #aperture #universityofnewmexicopress

Helen Gee’s memoir about opening one of the first successful photography galleries in NYC, 1954, goes rather under the radar. Have you read this book? It is a must read for knowing your history of women in photography. . . ‘Limelight’ is the name of our inaugural exhibition at Obscura this Summer- an exhibition of five female pioneering contemporary photographers, coming July 14 at OG. There is no coincidence in this title. 🥂📷🔆🎉 . . #limelight #photoexhibition #photosummer2018 #santafe #femalehistoryofphotography #femalephotogallerist #helengee #fineartphotography by #contemporarywomenphotographers #susanburnstine #brigittecarnochan #cocofronsac #alinesmithson #joycetenneson @obscuragallerysf #santafegallery #obscuragallery #nmtrue
