Doing what I can to increase prairie ecosystems here on my little piece of land McHenry County, IL

Vegetable garden update! The lettuces have been outstanding and they'll be finished up soon. Honestly I'm surprised they haven't bolted already with all the heat, and you can see they're starting to get leggy, which means flowering is coming soon. I'm actually letting each variety go to seed if possible so I can try collecting again...it worked last year with New Red Fire, fingers crossed for this year!
I'm stumped by the loofahs...I started like 8 seedlings, they did great, then they suddenly started struggling, and most died. I planted a couple stragglers anyway, and one new seedling popped up and it's now vining and budding! I have no idea if they'll get enough growing time to actually produce fruit, but I'm letting them go because clearly they're onto something.
Got some integrated pest management going with marigolds around my tomatoes...the tomatoes are looking good and starting to set fruit!
Lastly, I found a lightning bug chilling on a lettuce plant as its daytime nap spot ❤️

Hey everyone! Wanted to let you know I started @bringbackprairies as a place to post all my gardening stuff! Follow me over there to nerd out on my native plant gardening and habitat restoration efforts (plus veggie gardening of course and probably a decent dose of Bowie pics). I'll still post major garden successes and really pathetic failures on this account, but for the ins & outs of native plants, botany info, and general gardening geek stuff, join me there!
