“The magazine started off because I wanted to help smaller bands.”

In this clip, Chris Wynne explains what has kept him involved with In Effect Hardcore since launching the fanzine in 1988:

“It’s rewarding when you get a band that’s really good and you know they’re not on people’s radars, and you’re the person who feels like, ‘Hey, I can expose this band to more people.’”

In the full episode of DCxPC Live Presents: Scene Support, Chris and I talk about starting In Effect with 50 copies, learning how to make a fanzine from Freddie Alva, mailing interview questions to bands, approaching musicians outside CBGB, distributing copies in Belgium and Japan, and eventually bringing In Effect back as a website.

We also discuss writing interviews and reviews, balancing the work with family and everyday life, the weekly Bring the Noise radio show, distributing Outsider Magazine on Long Island, bands Chris believes deserve more attention, and some great Two Man Advantage stories.

As Chris says near the end of the episode: “We’re just here to help out hardcore and just, you know, make no money doing this. This is all done out of love.”

The full episode is available now. Listen or watch through the link in our bio.

I’ve been thinking about making special editions of Outsider between regular issues. There would be a specific theme for each one and be a short run. Photocopied and hand assembled like the zine was originally, but half size. This festival gave me the motivation to make the first one. It features the bands on the @hardcoreinthe914 bill, a history lesson on Westchester Hardcore by @iquestionnotmedia , info on @nyhccomics @ineffecthc @bringthenoiseradio and the new release from @memorylosshc called “A Good Problem To Have”. The issue is dedicated to the memory of our friend @allsenseaside Mike McAuley and includes a tribute to him. Thanks to @masato_chaos for the incredible artwork on our cover. 50 copies in the first run, FREE at the fest, first come first serve. I will make a second small run for mail order. Stay tuned for when they will be available. SEE YOU TOMORROW!

(Yes, we will be playing the Knicks game. Go Hardcore! Go Knicks!)
