chicago juke is here to stay

if you aren’t familiar, chicago juke is a sound that has originated decades ago, and with drake’s recent song with iconic savvy “true bestie” gaining traction off his recent album “maid of honour,” we’ve seen some mainstream listeners give the sound more eyes than ever

artists like iconic savvy, lil m.u., glizzy glow, mello buckzz, and more are a few names we’re watching pioneer a new generation of chicago juke forward in the 2020s decade, but a true post dedicated to the sound isn’t done right without delving into the long-standing lineage that backs up what we’re seeing now

“juke” and footwork is a dance-driven sound built around 150 to 170pm, with chopped vocals, rapid drum patterns, and heavy bass. the sound was built in battle circles, school gyms, and neighborhood gyms across chicago’s south and west sides

before juke though, the sound of chicago house and “ghetto house” is something that originated prior, with super percussive elements that’d eventually serve as a precursor to the sound of footwork

it’s to the credit of various namely djs and groups from the scene such as gant-man and dj puncho that juke got its sound, and as time went on, we’d watch these BPM numbers scale higher and higher. various djs are to credit, from rp boo to dj clent to dj rashad to dj spinn of teklife and traxman. groups such as the phirm, dungeon boys, and wolfpak turned the sound up more

the sound would break out as the years went on, with one namely performance from missy elliot’s 2005 BET performance. we’d see the sound eventually go global with european labels and more bringing the sound global

the sound of chicago drill eventually took over the city as dj rashad’s passing (rest in peace) also had a huge impact, but today, as dance-adjacent subgenres have been embraced by the internet in jersey club, drum n bass, s*xy drill, and more, juke is having a huge moment again

what are your thoughts on chicago juke’s resurgence? if you’re from chicago, what comments do you have seeing it as a part of the city’s DNA? lmk <3
