the art, the artist and the muse 🌀🎞️

this shoot was very special to me because we shot it at the beach in my hometown that i visit almost every day. the ocean has healed me over and over again, and always guides me back to whats most important to me & my heart. love comes in so many forms, and it is everywhere 🌊⋆。𖦹 °.🐚⋆🫧

how do we feel about this NEW LOOK? 🤭✨

it’s tuesday, welcome to coil conversations! today’s episode is special because… i braided my hair! and ohhh, my hair was in need of some rest. protective styles like this are such a beautiful way to give our hair a break while still looking so good.

yesterday, i sat in @be.braided’s chair (located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands), and instantly, i was 9 years old again, sitting between my grannie’s legs, feeling the warmth of someone carefully tending to my hair. there’s something so special about getting your hair braided by someone who truly cares.

@be.braided only braids with natural hair, and i love this mindset. so much synthetic braiding hair is full of chemicals that cause irritation, and we put it right on our scalp! choosing to work only with natural hair is a choice rooted in care, in health, and in loving our crowns the way they are.

what a joyful, lovely and peaceful experience. i walked out of that chair feeling like the most beautiful black girl ever ♡ what do y’all think? let me know in the poll!

Happy to share the result of my collab with Spoken Word Artist and guest curator Britney Lindo (@noirexistence ) for @maritiemmuseumrotterdam 🌊 This project is part of the memorial year of the history of slavery. She wrote the poem ‘Silent Grounds, Deep Waters,’ in which she articulates her inner conflict with the past and the port city Rotterdam, personally, powerfully, and vulnerably. It felt very special for me to visually translate this piece for her on the windows of the museum entrance ✨

The design consists of several elements. I wanted to portray her prominently above any other elements, floating in the water. This to contrast the illustrations from the past, where people of color were depicted as smaller and lower. A pocket watch in which shackles of time transition into broken shackles of captivity. And let’s not forget the waves of emotions that we experience in her piece. What she is made of and what connects her to the element of water. To complete it all, sign painter @vincentie provided the artwork with the title of the poem.

Britney, thank you once again for your trust. I am very proud of what we have been able to create together and the precious moments we shared during this project 💕
