The Monkey Face is a 350ft-tall spire at Smith Rock State Park in Oregon. If you throw a rock at it, you are certain to hit a soaring Arete or splitter finger-crack or a five-star classic face climb that is as steeped in history as it is exposed. The formation overhangs significantly on all four sides and though it screams to be climbed, its summit remained virgin until 1960 when Dave Bohn, Jim Fraser, and Vivian Staender finally made the first ascent via The Pioneer Route (5.7, A0).

In the 1980s, OG Smith local Alan Watts climbed the spectacular finger cracks on the East Face, Rising Expectations (11++) and The East Face Start (12c,). Both routes are worth a long road trip. A few years later, Watts returned to free climb the upper section of the East Face which became Americas first 5.13d (trad or sport), a route so futuristic it remained unrepeated for many years after Watts’ ascent.

In 1992, French climber Jean-Baptiste Tribout arrived to give America its first 8c+ (5.14c) with his FA of Just Do It.

Anyway, that’s enough old-timer history for today. The formation is amazing—go climb it!

❤️ Prime 85/135 appreciation post ❤️
Around 1989, I picked up a Pentax SMC 85 F2 lens at a flea market. I think it cost $60 and that was a deal because it was used and the rear glass was pockmarked as if someone had taken an ice pick to it. Despite the damage, it was an amazing lens that felt like a cheat code. I honestly feel like that lens was the difference between success and failure in my early days trying to make it as a pro climbing photographer— the bokeh on it just hit different than anything I had seen. Later, I switched to Canon, who also makes a cult-favorite 135 F2 (now 1.8) with even more dramatic bokeh. In my experience, trying to shortcut with mid-tele zooms doesn’t cut it—those lenses are versatile, but the images PALE when compared with the primes.

Anyway, if your lens quiver is lacking a fast prime 85 or 135, I highly recommend trying one out!

Cities to Crags (CtC) is a ride along with @BearCam and myself, and sometimes special guests. It’s a modern spin on the old-fashioned climbing road trip story. It aims to highlight multiple communities in several different areas: CtC 2.0 was Detroit to Chicago to Wisconsin to Minnesota to The U.P. of Michigan.

It is always intended to be a fun, relaxed, interesting and inspiring journey, and a journey thru regional locales of community, culture and climbing. The first trip was in the Fall of 2019 through the Southeastern United States.

Cities to Crags is aimed to be an exploration of locational fabric with climbing as a common thread. It will always include both wilder, quieter, more remote natural outdoor venues, as well as the purely urban environments and climbing gyms – even including art, music, pop culture, food, and drink. The hope is to give a voice to each location, and allow unique sights, sounds, flavors, colors, textures, feelings, and styles to naturally emerge.

These were taken at Shuteye Ridge in California, (where the video was filmed) when the US government shutdown kicked us all out of Yosemite Valley in 2013. It was peaceful up there, beautiful, and just plain fun. You may recognize some of the fine folks in these images. ❤️
