When we set out to visit Iceland there were 3 sightings I was hoping for, but not promised to see. Puffins. Lava. Aurora Borealis. In Iceland, timing is everything, and still you could be unlucky. We missed an active volcano eruption by weeks. We missed the puffins by days. I felt a third strike was inevitable. On 09/01/2025 at 22:50 I was proven so very wrong.

Not only did we get a chance to see The Northern Lights… We witnessed a display beyond my wildest imagination. After a day of adventuring the northwest coastline we checked into @hotelbudir, got ourselves settled, walked over to Búðakirkja, snapped some shots and headed back down for dinner. While chatting up the staff during our meal my Aurora App notifications were going off… Checked the map… DIRECT OVERHEAD HIT. Pending visibility due to cloud coverage we had over 50% chance of a sighting.

At 22:30 we layered up: beanie, base layers, weather proof overalls, down jacket, wind breaker parka, gloves, merino wool socks… anything to stay as warm as possible for as long as possible. The wind bites here. Photo gear, check. Headlamp, check.

22:50, Is that it over there?!

What happened next was so surreal. Supernatural really. In a gradual symphony of light, space exploded and danced across the sky for more than 90 minutes. WILD ICELAND YOU HAVE MY HEART 🤍
