I found all these photos on an old external hard drive recently. I have so much love for my brothers that I spent all those days and nights with. The skatepark was like Lord of the Flies. It was full of people from broken homes or no homes at all that came together to make our own dysfunctional family. The last photo was later on and the last time I saw Jesse alive. We both ended up being in Chico at the same time. I was on my way to play poker and he called, saying he was at the skatepark, where we had spent so much of our lives, with Travis and Travis’ new puppy. I decided to put off cards and go have a beer with my old friend. We ended up killing a flask in front of the park, cracking each other up and catching up on the last year. It was all the best parts of Jesse, the guy that felt like a big brother and best friend. But Jesse was all of it; your best friend and the biggest cocksucker you’d ever meet. I left for a few hours and when we met back up, he was the vitriolic drunk he was also known for. To all of us in Chico, when Jesse first arrived, he became a larger than life character. So talented and traumatized already. He was 15 and had run away from home to couch surf in Chico and take over the skatepark. I have to think it’s not just my dreams that he still shows up in. Company Flow seems like a good soundtrack for this era. I was so obsessed with the underground hip hop scene at the time, as a lot of us were. Not to mention, this song strangely ended up on Fulfill the Dream, such an iconic video of the time. (Lot of people missing on here. I’d love to get more videos and photos from people to make a legit YouTube edit of old tricks and photos of our youth.)
