UGLY TALK: UNMASKING THE FEMALE POWERHOUSE. 🖤

An honest conversation about what it means to lead as a woman, from visibility and intuition to self-trust and the uncomfortable parts of growth.

Big thanks to Doron Petersan (@doronfgp) , Kayla Bolyai (@kaykaybo ), and Vuyo Joboda (@vuyodarling ) for bringing their stories and perspectives to the room, and to our host @viktoria.cornelius for guiding the conversation.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and got “ugly” with us, and to our event partner @belong.nyc for having us.

This is what Ugly Talk is about. The conversations we don’t always get to have out loud.

My actual birthday (23 Dec) ran hot and cold, as is typical for a woman my age! 😝 Hot sauna, followed by cold plunge; hot pizzas followed by ice cream cake (that I made!) and chilled Lambrusco—all of it making for a very happy birthday.

Two fun days of pre-gaming before my birthday.

NYC: Annual holiday walk down 5th Ave and then festive and classic cocktails in Brooklyn.

Asbury Park: Mani-pedis and then Ocean Ave Stompers at R Bar

Not even the Abominable Snowman would squash the merriment!

I hadn’t been to Cookbook Club since the spring, and this one was a really fun one to come back to.

We all read Amy Sedaris’s “I Like You: Entertaining under the Influence,” which I had already read years ago and still find both hilarious and practical. It contains a surprisingly good number of hosting tips and recipes. And craft ideas.

For this holiday meeting, we didn’t need to cook from the selected book as we usually do. The idea was to bring a traditional family holiday recipe—hence the kugel, brisket, and plum pudding.

I opted to cook from the book (Mr Mace’s Mushroom Casserole and Greek Beans), but as a nod to my family and my deceased British father, in particular, I batched some cocktails made with Rose’s Lime Juice, which, along with tonic water, was always in my fridge when growing up. The cocktail recipe came from Paul Child, Julia’s husband: Tourmaline with gin, said sweetened lime juice, and beet juice, which gives the stirred drink both its color and name.

Looking forward to 2026 with Cookbook Club!

Rachel is right: Marathon Sunday is the best day in NYC!

The autumn weather is usually lovely, and everyone is in a positive and agreeable mood.

I watched the race from Maison Premiere with Scott and Rachel—almost front row seats, with some of the city’s best cocktails. Also, a fun surprise visit from Rooney, Finn’s brother

After that I attended a book launch, with 12 whiskies (congrats, Robin Robinson!) followed by more cocktails, making Marathon Sunday also one of the booziest!

Before we get too much farther into autumn—three days in—I’m posting a few photos from the summer that didn’t make it onto IG. What a surprise!

The summer, though not long enough (never is!) was a really good one, in large part, I think, because I enjoyed so many varied experiences and got to see so many people. Thanks to you all for making my summer such a joyous one!

☀️ A visit to me mum’s in Atl Highlands from my boarding school Latin teacher
☀️My annual trip to Sag Harbor to visit Rich for his birthday. We sailed to Block Island and met Big Dave there.
☀️A visit to me in Asbury Park from Brona. We saw the stunning Sturgeon Moon rise up
☀️ Surfrider beach cleanup in Sea Bright with the NJ Maker’s Mark team
☀️ Tiki time! I love when @laylow transforms to Lei-low
☀️ My sister’s sweet birthday, celebrated in Asbury Park
☀️ Beach time! I try to go every weekend in Asbury Park, sometimes meeting local friends there, other times going solo and reading the Sunday Times, and other times friends come visit me. Ryan and Rajeev came down three times!
☀️ Love hosting people by my condo’s pool but sometimes, due to weather, the fete comes inside.

A more social US Open than usual, with not one but two friends joining me on my first of two days at the national tennis center: Brona, who has been a steady tennis pal since 2021, and Paul, who had never been. We had lots of fun with our lots of tennis. My second day was solo, which is fine; I wouldn’t want to subject anyone to 15 hours straight of live tennis, from 11am to 2am!

This marks 29 years in a row of attending the Open, not including 2020–always a treat even though it signals the end of summer.

Congrats to @almanacphilly for being named one of the new best bars in America by @bonappetitmag !

Alas, we haven’t been to Almanac yet, but luckily the team came to NYC, invited by @hannaleepr, and we got to try them. Exquisite.

Philly is in our future.

We had to go to NYC for a taste of Philly.

And boy are we glad we did! Cocktails by @almanacphilly and sashimi & sushi, all oprated out of the spot in the City of Brotherly Love and Damn Fine Drinks & Food. The event was organized by @hannaleepr ., for her first/ever Philly client—and surely not her last. So many fine and delicious come out of this city to the south.

Winter Cookbook Club! A classic: Marcella Hazan’s Essentials of Italian Cooking.” We usually put all the dishes out at once but for this meeting, we coursed it like an Italian meal.
