HOORAY | she bloody did it - Nnena Kalu won the 2025 Turner Prize!! After much sobbing on my part I re-watched Charlotte Hollinshead’s brilliant speech again, such important words spoken including - “this award smashes the prejudice away. Nnena Kalu you’ve made history.”

For someone who works in disability art, this is quite a moment for us all - allies, advocates and artists, and what a perfect role model. Having known and worked with Nnena for years, I couldn’t be happier for Nnena, ActionSpace and for what this hopefully means moving forwards in this country for work made by disabled, learning disabled, deaf, neurodivergent artists, and so on.

‘idol, legend, winner, whatever’!!! This is what her rosette on the evening said and what a young learning disabled artist recently said to her!

In 2022 I received funding to create artist portrait films - to document the artist and their art practice of eight UK based learning disabled and neurodivergent artists, Nnena being one. These were then shown in a 2024 exhibition I co-curated at Nottingham Castle & Art Gallery alongside artworks by each featured artist, titled ‘Kaleidoscopic Realms’. It feels important to re-share this film now, to highlight Nnena to those who know less, but it also has BSL (British Sign Language) and captions embedded for those who need to access it on their own terms, and in their own language. Enjoy, and once again big congrats to Nnena, and I can't wait to celebrate with you!!

Directed filmed and edited by Bronwen Parker Rhodes, assisted by Louisa Rechenbach, and music by Jenna Whelan at Pyramids. BSL by Chisato Minamimura filmed by red weather productions. Thanks to Necessity for funding these beautiful artist portrait films.

This film is 6 minutes long.
