This past week marked six years since Dante passed away. And this year is the year that I turn older than my older brother. Life doesn’t prepare you for things like that - the loss of a child, a sibling, a best friend. Your whole life flashing before your eyes, and the eyes of everyone you love. My 20s have been marked by trying to make sense of this loss. Why? What does it mean to honour all that he was and all that he could have been? What do we have to show for the years that he himself should have had?

One of the ways we have tried to figure that out is through the foundation. 5 years, 50,000 thousand dollars, the biggest yearly scholarship at our local high school. Doing a tournament, honouring what he loved - basketball. Our parents. His family, friends, community. He showed up no matter what for the people who needed him and we can only try to do the same. This past year we marked the fifth and final tournament, and we made it over our goal. We don’t know what we will make of the foundation in the next five years, but I look forward to figuring it out. Nothing feels significant enough, but everything feels like a step forward towards a small fraction of what he deserved

I have spent the last six years trying to find an answer that isn’t out there. I thought - if I work hard enough, accomplish enough professionally, run far and fast enough, cry and laugh hard enough, push myself to the edge of exhaustion, leave nothing left in me, will I find an answer? If I never move home, can I continue to pretend he is still there? If I’m just relentless, will I find a way of making it mean something to grow older than him? Will there be a moment where I feel a bigger reason within my reach? The answer is, predictably!, no. Perhaps (yes) it was immature to think that would ever work. But what I know is that he made me and everyone he touched better - and I will try to pay that forward while I’ll never be able to repay him. And I am grateful for all the people who have helped me through it all, and made this all possible. I’m grateful for our parents and the world they built. Will spend the rest of my life wishing D was still along for the ride
