~ another ellipse around the sun and reflecting on a year of quantum dreaming, circling orbits & the magnetic pull of the full moon portal.

The moon was witnessed in both hemispheres this year - a silent presence above Berlin’s snowcapped rooftops, London’s parks & Margate’s coastline, @gutwrench_records gigs in the local bahn mi shop, a european beech tree in the civil twilight of a Wiltshire forest, @barrochford parties that disrupt the ether, a glass full of prayers in a grove of ancient plumwood trees, sandlewood incense (traded for wine), evaporating candles, romantic synaesthesia, funeral playlists, birdsong, warm hugs, and the exhilarating thrill of a Namadgi summer storm.⚡️

This has been a year rich with friendship ~ new friends, old friends … a tone of deep connection, which feels a force to anchor into right now. 🫶🏻 so many beautiful people & moments ~ here are just a few:

~ ‘Ghosts & Monsters’ is now open at @messumswest, UK.

When I first arrived at Messums just over a month ago, @hannah_m_davies (director of art operations & install queen) told me that the 13th century tithe barn Messums West gallery is housed in, is the real curator of its exhibitions. Hannah - who spends countless hours and late nights in this gallery - feels the barn is a she. She is an ancient sentient creature. And she has a mysterious magnetic pull that draws people & works to her that are right for her space.

I feel very humbled to have been pulled by her from across the world.

The central work of this exhibition is a series that evolved around the song of the Pied Butcherbird - recorded early one morning while on residency at @the_corridor_project_australia. There are 8 notes in the butcherbird’s melody which were played into a chladni plate - an instrument designed by physicist Ernst Chladni in the 18th century. Over the past few years I have been working w Australian designer @tomkinsdesign on a custom design of this instrument. The Chladni plate oscillates salt on a metal plate to form geometric shapes from sound vibrations. The shapes generated from the notes of this pied butcherbird song have become a series of artworks exhibited in this show.

There is a sense of universality to the shapes produced by the vibrations of the chladni plate - resonances to iconography used by cultures from across the world. Aware and sensitive towards incidental appropriation of Indigenous cultural property - the process and development of this body of work was discussed with Aleisha Lonsdale, chairperson of the Mudgee Aboriginal Lands Council. It is fascinating that when a local songbird’s melody is played into a Chaldni plate, it produces imagery that holds similarities to Wiradjuri people’s own visual language in representing the natural world.

The shapes also speak to the hexafoils which are scratched into the wall of the barn from the medieval period. Known as ‘witches marks’ these symbols were inscribed around windows and doors to protect malicious energies from entering a space.
