Evening mass on the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

On this anniversary of the passing of St. Francis of Assisi (and note he is of Assisi, not A Sissy he wasn't a sissy), I thought we could do a little Ignation form of prayer this evening called imaginative contemplation. As I set the scene for you, I'd like to invite you to imagine what it looked like, what your experience would have been if you were standing right there, or nearly beside St. Francis as he left this earth to become a member of God’s kingdom in heaven.

So, on October the third 1226, in the middle of the night, St. Francis laid dying. He was surrounded by members of his community. Some would be kneeling, some would be sitting, some would be standing. They all would be crying because their beloved founder, their friend, their brother, was about to leave them. Francis made an extraordinary request.

How does it strike us this evening? Francis asked his brothers to take off his habit, to strip him naked, to leave him on the bare earthen floor. So that when he left this earth, he would bring nothing with him. He would be absolutely poor, and enter the kingdom of God as “il Poverello”, the little poor one. As he was dying, Francis did not cry out in pain. He did not cry out in sorrow or regret or anguish. Rather, he began to sing. He added the final verse of his beloved Canticle to the sun. It began with “I praise you O Lord for sister death. Who comes for all the living.”

About that same time, something very unusual happened. As Francis was singing this final verse, meadowlarks flew into the rafters of the hut. Because La Verna at that time was just a poor shepherd's hut. Now, what's interesting, meadowlarks are day birds - they sing only in the sunlight. But here it was night and they began to sing as Francis's soul left his body and he went home to Jesus. What did that look like for you? As Sister Death came to Francis, who received her with great joy.

Eighth centuries have passed since this event took place, but here we are remembering a legacy with a special mass that invites us out of the ordinary, the ordinary time of year, into a very special celebration, because Francis's legacy is
