HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS!

For the past 9 years, I’ve shared a list of things that make me happy. Last year, when I sat down to share my annual post, I was confronted with an empty list. I realized then that I could not continue the tradition, because what should’ve been lighthearted instead felt like a pressure to write about joy when I couldn’t find it for myself.

Though the full story is for another time, I had become extremely unhealthy. When health is a problem, it becomes the only problem. Things had really gotten bad when the only thing that mattered for me anymore was to get better.

All this to say, a year ago, I did not think I would be celebrating this today. But what I thought was the worst thing that could happen to me turned out to be the best thing that could happen for me. It seemed like God was handing me empty bags, but I later discovered they were to hold all the gifts coming my way. Like Rascal Flatts sang in the Hannah Montana movie, those hard experiences were “like northern stars”.

Today, I acknowledge that happiness is not about the absence of sadness, but rather the presence. I know love because I knew grief. I know strength because I knew pain. I know that anger is just my body’s response to telling me what I am worth. It is a gift to feel things with such intensity because I get the privilege of knowing gratitude and love at its fullest capacity.

“Things were once so bad. Now when they’re bad, they’re inherently good.”

My life did a full 180 since graduating, and though it’s only been a few months, I have learned that it’s not time that creates meaning, rather resonance. The more aligned you are with the things you are engaged with, the more meaningful your experiences feel. I have found so much meaning in the present moment that there is no wonder in my mind why graduation feels like so many lifetimes ago.

I am so thankful to have been connected with resources that shaped my journey, and if you are struggling, I empower you to find the courage to ask for help.

So once again, happy happiness day! Speak kindly to yourself.
