Part 2 of our studio build! After weeks of repairs, we could finally move on to the part that determines whether a studio actually works on camera. Lighting.

The goal with this phase wasn’t to rush into anything permanent. After spending an entire month fixing every wall in this place, the last thing I wanted to do was create new holes without knowing what actually worked. So before locking anything in, we lived in the space, tested setups on real shoots, and figured out what made sense for how we actually use the studio.

In the background we opened all of the blinds so we could see straight out the windows. This gives us a little bit of color, a little bit of texture, and some depth. For the duration of the interview the sun is on the opposite side of the building so the exposure wont change that much. In the space I have a @nanlite_official FS300C with a fresnel. That is firing into a white ceiling to provide some ambience in the mid ground so it doesn’t feel too dark as we get to the windows.

Outside the window camera left I have a @modernstudioequipment 40x40 solid floppy that blocks the real sun from getting into this space early in the morning. The 40x40 on the go kit is really handy for situations like this. On talent I have a 2 foot @nanlite_global pavoube that is boomed out overhead to provide a hair light. Its set to a lightly warmer color temperature to give some color contrast on talent. For the keylight I have an @intellytech Mega 6 FC with a @brooklynsoftlight magic cloth insert. This gives me a really gorgeous quality of light and a relatively small footprint so it keeps setup and breakdown pretty quick. Finally, to help that keylight I have a large white balance that lifts the shadows on the shadow side just to help balance the image out properly to the DP’s eye.

Starting with the background, we have a @nanlite_official 720B with a fresnel pushing in directional light in to the space behind talent. Coming from the same direction, I also have a @nanlite_global FC120B with a projection attachment to ping in some hard light and round out the shape coming from the windows. It gives me a hard hit of light to help the space have a little more texture.

Inside the space camera right, I have a Nanlite FS300C bouncing into some white ceiling to help lift the right side of frame. Without it, that area of the image doesn’t fit with the rest of the image. On talent, I have a two foot Nanlite pavotube boomed out overhead to give the hair light. Its set to a slightly warmer temperature for the key light. I have an @intellytech Mega 6 FC with a @brooklynsoftlight magic cloth insert, and that gives me a gorgeous, gorgeous quality of light and a relatively small footprint.

The key light is an @intellytech mega 6fc with a @brooklynsoftlight magic cloth and a second layer of light diffusion. The two layers of diffusion give me really soft light for the wash of blue. The edge light is a @nanliteusa pavoslim 120c set to a magenta color. That is also double diffused to keep the footprint small but give me a nice quality of light.

I had to spend a lot of time flagging and blocking light off the background so I could do my best to get a void of darkness around the subject. I also had to do a lot of positional tweaking with the lights to get them to put light in the correct places.

I have not had a chance to watch Copenhagen Cowboy, which is weird because I really love the images and style of Nicolas Winding Refn. Neon Demon, Only God Forgives, and Drive are some of my biggest cinematographic influences.

A lot of the time the practical fixtures in your scene will not give you enough light to expose your scene. In these scenarios you will need to push light and shape you subject out from the background utilizing your lights.

For this I have the @nanliteusa forza 60c casting some hard blue light into the background you break up the scene a little bit. In the lamp is a Nanlite Pavobulb 10c. An excellent film grade loght bulb that ensures full control and a flicker free practical. On top of that is one of the diffusers which helps to control the spill of the lamp and bounce some of the toppy light back down. The key light is the beautiful @intellytech mini mega 6fc with a @brooklynsoftlight magic cloth and a piece of muslin like material. For grip I have some black flag control the key light a little bit, breaking up its shape and intensity. On the shadow side theres another one wedged into the couch to keep the shadows clean on the subject. Theres some bounce to wrap the key light a little more and get it all the way across the subject. The final piece is a Nanlite pavotube that gives the hair som texture and an edge to the subject.

Some BTS from a shoot with @justinpatricolo @amymoore_photo and @mpbcom

We wanted to make something that was spooky. What was really spooky though was showing up to the peerspace with no grip knuckles and no c stand arms. I was a carpenter without a hammer! We made it work in the end!

The key light is an @intellytech mega 6fc with a @brooklynsoftlight magic cloth diffuser. Thats set to a preset candle flicker mode and gives us a great low angle key light. Its flagged off to keep a large portion of the light off of the end table. For the hairlight we have a @nanliteusa forza 60c with the projection attachment to give the talent a hairlight. It plays off the practical in the background. For the fill side I have a Nanlite pavoslim 120c with some muslin to add some moonlight blue to the shadows. In the background is a hint of light from @amarancreators 300c with a spotlight. That highlights this strange little globe that we found in the space. The final bit was to introduce some white bounce to help with the subject.

Here’s the breakdown for how I was able to recreate this shot from Blade Runner (1982). The still comes from @shotdeck . I have a location in my basement that is PERFECT to recreating this shot. I knew I would be able to create the shaft of light by pushing some heavy light through that window.

In that back window I have a @nanliteusa 720b. That is the most powerful light that I have access to so it will give me the most amount of play in trying to get that shaft of light to work. On its own it doesn’t do too much, but when the haze gets introduced it should do what I need it to do. For the edge light I have a Nanlite Forza 60c fixed into the ceiling to give me the hard edge. It didn’t give me the desired edge unfortunately, I think what I need was some more power and greater distance from the subject to get a similar edge from the reference image. The key light is the beautiful @intellytech mega 6fc with a @brooklynsoftlight magic cloth diffuser. This gives me a gorgeous quality of light that will wrap the subject nicely. That is placed right behind the camera and at a low angle. That gives me the fill I am looking for in order to match the reference image. The full RGB capabilities of the Intellytech will allow me to dial in the color of the light in order to match the reference image. I also did some light wardrobing and production design to just fill out the frame, similarly enough to the reference image. At the end of it, I am pretty happy with the results and the only part I would like to figure out is the edge light. How would you do it?

This was all shot on Zeiss Standard Speeds from @mpbcom . MPB is an online platform where photographers and filmmakers can buy and sell used photo and video gear. They do a wonderful job of hand checking and verifying all the gear that comes in, so you can get some really quality gear and some great discounts as a result.

This setup has a bright backlight in the @nanliteusa FC500b. That light gives me enough power and bi color functionality to add a faux warm sun. All the other lights are inside, trying to build off that window. The key light is an @intellytech mini mega 3FC. That has my new @brooklynsoftlight magic cloth diffusers in them. These are incredible products and I highly recommend them to any filmmaker who still has stock diffusers in their lights. Brooklyn Soft Light will custom make sizes and fabrics that you can use with your lights. To help with ambience I have a Intellytech mega 6FC far across the room. Its far away to make use of the inverse square law. Due to its distance, the intensity on the subject and the wall behind them is the same. The final touch is a Nanlite Forza 60c which adds a little edge light to the subject. Once again @hollyland.na makes my life so much easier in providing the ability to see what I am doing away from the camera.
