In the weeks leading up to our fall concert, we’ll be diving into the pieces our ensembles will be performing, starting with “Gloriosa” by Yasuhide Ito.

At tonight’s Manhattan Wind Ensemble rehearsal, we had a special guest conductor. Jeff Ball (founder, artistic director, and conductor of @brooklynwindsymphony) had conducted this piece a couple years ago with the Brooklyn Wind Symphony, and brought that experience to rehearsal to inform our group’s performance.

In keeping with the theme of our fall concert, “Gloriosa” takes inspiration from early Christianity in Japan, combining Gregorian chants with Japanese folk music in this unique piece for wind orchestra.

Join us on November 14 to hear the Manhattan Wind Ensemble perform “Gloriosa,” in a celebration of how music can revitalize old traditions through new compositional voices.

🎨🎵🗒️ Every program I create is a unique work of art, inspired by music or the concert theme. It informs the composition, and I challenge myself to try new things each cycle. The programs become keepsakes for the band members and audience of the time and place in history, like a playbill for a Broadway show. These programs have been a blank canvas for me to improve and explore design over the years.

🍷🌊 The Wine-Dark Sea painting got a lot of mileage! Since the concert theme was modern wind symphony, I chopped up the painting into chunks and really pushed the individual compositions. I went with a friendly serif typeface instead of a slim sans serif, which would have been my go to- the cover was inspired by vinyl record covers that had large art pieces and a minimal band of type.

🤩 Do you have a favorite page in the spread? Let me know in the comments!

Eternally grateful for the Brooklyn Wind Symphony for my Carnegie Hall debut, with Kimberly Roof conducting my piece “To The Fullest”. A huge thank you to Kim, Jeff Ball, and the Brooklyn Wind Symphony for bringing my work to life.

I’m incredibly thankful for Jane Bajuk for attending the concert and trusting me to write this elegy for her daughter, Lauren, who was a fellow student at UT Austin.

Lastly, thank you to John Mackey and Michael Markowski for supporting me through my first Carnegie Hall performance. It was an honor to share the program with one of my favorite band pieces, Wine Dark Sea.
