Featherstone Street for me was a way to go back to basics, just the camera and natural light. The sitters all were intrigued by having their picture taken by this method, very few people have the chance to experience this in a world where everyone has a cameraphone. The 8x10 camera demanded their focus, and mine as I was still only getting 1/4 to 1/15 second exposure at f11 leaving no room for focus error or movement.
Working with the camera on a tripod portraits become more constructed. Creating work in this more traditional way is fast being overlooked, and ultimately lost, in favour of using digital methods. These portraits can be considered as a reaction against the ubiquity of photography heralded by the rise of social media and the notion of the universal photographer.
Within 18 months the building across from my studio grew into a 6 floor office block and the light disappeared bringing an end to the project.

To begin, a portrait.

Made by Wing Shya, whose cinematic eye has helped shape the visual language of Hong Kong. To be seen through his lens is a quiet honour.

My own work begins elsewhere: in black and white, in observation, in the gestures, shadows and moments of stillness that cities briefly reveal.
Today, that work finds a home.

My new website brings together photographs made across different cities and years, as one continuing walk through the urban landscape.

This is where the work begins.

Am proud to see your artistic contribution reach across the globe.

‘Ten Combs is a collaboration between designer Danielle Brustman and Jonathan Ellery, the artist, publisher and founder of London design studio Browns. A collaborative self-portrait Brustman asked her closest friend across the world to share words describing her personality traits - positive or negative - and they came back with the words we see on the ten titular combs: obsessive, sensitive, romantic, ardent, optimist, storyteller, chaotic, loud, bright star and mercurial. The words appear on ten 3D-printed over-sized hair combs, like cartoon thought bubbles.’
