Every single day, the sun provides Alabamians with more energy than we could ever use - all for free! So why aren’t we using more of it? As solar energy takes off around the world, Alabama is left behind, with most still using dirty fossil fuels to power our communities. Reckoning with the Sun explores the exciting possibilities of harnessing the sun to meet increasing demand, and the complicated choices that come with it. Can we make room for solar without giving up the wetlands, waterways and wildlife that make Alabama special? Directed by @callie_mejia

See this film + four more at the Southern Exposure Films World Premiere! September 25 in Birmingham and all over the South after that! More info at the link in bio.

“It is nature and humanity’s great misfortune that God put the entire Mobile River Basin and estuary-our nation’s most diverse ecosystem-in Alabama, the state with the weakest environmental laws”

Huge thank you to @brraines for his work promoting this amazing place and @mobilebaykeeper for the amazing work they do to protect it! @alabamacoastal @conservation.alabama

History, uncovered. 🌊

In this American Dream TV segment, I had the unforgettable opportunity to explore the Mobile-Tensaw Delta with Ben Raines, a renowned filmmaker, author, and the man who discovered the wreck of the Clotilda, the last known ship to bring enslaved Africans to America.

From the natural beauty of the delta to the weight of our shared past, this experience was humbling, eye-opening, and deeply meaningful. It’s a reminder that the land we love is layered with stories, some painful, all powerful.

Grateful to be a part of telling this one. Thank you, Ben!

I’ve had this book, The Last Slave Ship, for a while. It was written by Ben Raines @brraines, and published in 2022. There are other books about Clotilda and eventually I would like add all of them to my personal library. But, I’m just not ready to read them yet. 😑🤷🏾‍♀️ But for educational purposes, I suggest you learn more about Clotilda. 🥺

Spent the day in the Mobile-Tensaw River delta with my brother Ben Raines. He does eco tours of the estuary. We saw some amazing things. Swallow tail kites and purple gallinules were bird highlights for sure. We saw huge 70 pound gar and the lotus were blooming. I learn new things every trip we take in the coastal marshes. #coastalmarsh #gulfbird #galacticfunk #tipitinas
