📍 Last month, we brought together senior representatives from across the NWJC’s 27 Partner organisations, alongside members of our National Voice & Advisory Panel (NVAP), for our first NWJC Away Day in Birmingham.

Our intention was to create space to pause, reflect, connect and have honest conversations about the future of our coalition.

💬 What stood out most was the power of being together in person.

Participants spoke about feeling welcomed, seen and able to contribute in ways that online spaces rarely allow. Newer members felt included, while long-standing members valued the opportunity to reconnect, share learning and strengthen relationships.

Throughout the day, we explored important themes including participation, power, equity, regional variation, organisational pressures, and the realities of leading women’s organisations in an increasingly challenging landscape.

✨ One message came through clearly: our strength lies in our collective voice, the diversity of expertise across our network, and our willingness to reflect not only on what we do, but how we work together.

As we review the NWJC’s governance structures and participation routes, we're committed to turning reflection into action, ensuring engagement across the coalition is meaningful, equitable and sustainable.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their insight, honesty and energy to the day. 💜

Today was a historic first for specialist prison midwives: our first in-person away day, at the @midwives_rcm HQ in London, kindly funded by the @iolanthemidwife and the @uniofherts. It was really good to have the whole team together from all over the country ❤️
Thank you to the specialist prison midwives and midwifery support workers for everything you do to support pregnant women in prison and mothers separated from their babies ❤️
We set up the Prison Midwives Action Group in 2021 so specialist prison midwives could support each other online and share good practice and challenges.
We were joined by Kate Brintworth, Chief Midwifery Officer for NHS England, @brthcompanions, Katherine Miller-Brunton and Susanna Demelas, and Liz Oliver at @onetruepathwellbeing, who led a really relaxing session at the end of the day ❤️Midwives valued having the time and safe space to speak openly. We came away with clear actions to take forward with colleagues in HMPPS and NHS England. #releasegap
Every pregnant woman and every mother, with or separated from her baby deserves safe, consistent care, in prison and after release. Today showed how much specialist prison midwives are doing to make that happen.

A really interesting conversation with Louisa at @rebell_justice for the Rebel Justice podcast about pregnancy, motherhood, midwifery and prison.I talk about my journey into this work to my role as Professor of Maternal Health and Criminal Justice at the @uniofherts and our Lost Mothers Project. We talk about pregnancy and motherhood in prison, the #release gap, #lived experience and why genuine co-production matters.
If this is something you care about or want to understand better, we would love you to have a listen. ❤️ @brthcompanions @cleanbrk @we_are_nwjc @treasuresfoundation_ @cominghomemcr @hopestreet_ost @womeninprisonuk @wearelollipoptoo @daisymay_hudson @levelup_uk @posysterling @samanthak_86 @carolynharrismp @natalieavlonitis @leahhazard @soafrodiziac @punkwitchjaney @1001criticaldaysfoundation @unlockcharity Beautiful artwork by @studiobeci ❤️

Don’t miss your chance to have your voice heard—submit before the deadline with the link in our bio! 🔗

📣 CALL OUT TO MY CARE EXPERIENCED PARENT COMMUNITY

This is one I really want people to know about.

NYAS and Birth Companions are working with the All Party Parliamentary Group for Care Experienced Children and Young People on a national inquiry looking at the intergenerational cycle of care involvement.

They want to hear directly from care experienced women and mothers about what has helped, what has made things harder, what has not worked, and what genuinely needs to change so care experienced women are better supported through pregnancy, motherhood and beyond.

If you are a care experienced woman and a parent, or have experienced children's social care involvement around pregnancy or parenting, your voice matters here.

And importantly, this isn't only for people whose children have been removed. If you have broken the cycle, raised your children without social care involvement, struggled without family support, built your own village, felt judged because of your care history, or simply have something to say about what could have helped you, that is valuable evidence too.

There is also a separate form for professionals who work with care experienced parents:

⏰ Deadline: 18 September 2026

Please share this with other care experienced parents too. Too often decisions are made about us without enough of us being in the room. This is an opportunity to put our experiences, our strengths and our ideas for change directly into a national inquiry.
