As I was reading The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton, I came across many passages that show insane amount of details.

“A travel book may tell us, for example, that the narrator journeyed through the afternoon to reach the hill town of X and after a night in its medieval monastery awoke to a misty dawn.

But we never simply ‘journey through an afternoon’. We sit in a train. Lunch digests awkwardly within us. The seat cloth is grey. We look out the window at a field. We look back inside. A drum of anxieties revolves in our consciousness. We notice a luggage label affixed to a suitcase in a rack above the seats opposite. … And still we may have reached the end only of the first minute of a comprehensive account of the events lurking within the deceptive sentence ‘He journeyed through the afternoon’.”
— The Art of Travel, Alain de Botton (p14)

As I would be on this bus for more than an hour, I had the thought of imitating Botton’s writing style with mundane and witty details. I also noticed Botton uses a lot of adjectives and adverbs to describe a vivid image, which I always love to see in his work.

I have also realized that I may have written some pieces with small details that make the mundane days seem much more interesting and sometimes ironic. This piece is probably the first one that I tried to do it imitating the writing style of Alain de Botton. Still a lot to improve but better late than never. I would love to write stories with vivid imagery and witty details.

As the bus stops, I glance out of the window to see a street sign. A machine-like voice reminds the passengers to get off and transfer to a different bus for a specific destination at the same time.

I look back up to see the destination sign on the bus and see Hong Kong International Airport rolling repeatedly. The bus passes under a bridge. The sea and a skyline of high-rises and hills hiding from the fog come into view.

The bus goes under a giant green sign that says Disney Resort and Sunny Bay. All I can see are fog, trees and more hills. Glancing around the bus for a couple of seconds, people are either asleep or staring 45 degrees downwards blankly.

Thank you @elliemorfou for the inspiration from her word search. I love trying new writing style.

Thank you @juxtaproser for taking a look at this. Mixing tenses is one of the worst nightmares for writers😂

I try not to include religion in my work. Religions are not the best belief for me, who doesn’t want to fit herself in a box.

If you don’t like to be fit in a box, my free newsletter Letters for Creatives might interest you. We have poetry, writing prompts, reading lists and plenty of space to fit you in.

Up next on the newsletter is an issue with some year review journal prompts. Subscribe at celestetsang.substack.com to receive them before they are sent to 260+ readers on this Thursday morning.

The year in review, followed by ones prior. The last twelve months came and went without real travel, social excursions, or any portraitures taken due to the pandemic and intensity of day to day work. 😅

Each month was focused towards resilience, stability, and love of humanity and self. An internal experiment of goal-setting and tending to rituals that feel good and create further balance.

Words of support and light sent from friends and chosen family literally meant the world and still do. I’m also incredibly grateful to be with a life-partner who’s eager to celebrate the simplest of victories with me, whilst continually serving as a pillar of kindness and warmth.

Mother Earth has taught me perhaps the most as well as of late, amidst all the hardship and transition. There are endless answers in its lush diversity and gardens. Waking up eagerly and creating a more loving and interconnected future, is my main interest. The quickest and most effective change and magick we can make moment to moment, is that which we stir and seed and grow within ourselves. 💫
