@josh_gillitt threw it all on the line to fly high and put himself amongst the World’s best big air kiteboarders.

Round one of the Qatar Airways GKA Kite World Tour Big Air World Cup took place at Parc des Dosses in Port Barcarès, France for the past two days. @lordsoftram saw 24 of the World’s best taking to the sky with Josh being one of only two South Africans in the competition.

Competition format - heats consist of four kiters each getting seven attempts with the three best jumps counting towards their overall score with the top two of each heat advancing to the next round. Josh put on a solid performance throughout the competition with big jumps and low kite angles generating more power out of the kite to shoot him through the air impressing the judges and making his way through the rounds to the Semi Finals.

The Semi Final saw Josh in what could easily be the final of any Big Air event with arguable the three best big air kiters right now being Jamie Overbeek, Lorenzo Casati and Andrea Principi(Current World Champion). The conditions were tricky with the Tramontana wind backing off through the heat and riders waiting for gusts. Josh threw everything at it but unfortunately fell short of the scores he needed to advance to the final. However, a fantastic start to the Big Air World Cup and his campaign to make the selection for the Red Bull King of the Air later this year.

What a crazy past few days ⚡️

Thank you so much to everyone who supported me!

The event was so much fun, but so different to anything I was used to. Competing the day after I land with very little sleep was quite challenging and the extreme conditions didn’t help the cause. Nonetheless I’m stoked! Kiting in 60 knots gusts with freezing temperatures to the point where it was snowing in my first heat was quite the experience. Managed to go all the way through to the Semi Finals and tied 4th with fellow Saffa @luca_ceruti_ 🇿🇦

Thanks so much to @lacunakites @mysticboarding @brucechrystal @mandzi97 @alex_vliege @railey_clothing @eezy_sun @plettlabs for sorting me out!

The second event of the KFC Summer Kitesurf Series presented by KFC Blouberg was the Air Games and Strapless Freestyle. We had a great international field with 10 nationalities being represented including 7 of the @redbullza King of the Air competitors.
