The presence of absence is a set of words that ran through my stay in New-zealand as part of my artist residency @artspace.aotearoa where @rutherbuchanan curated my performance Joie noire into an exhbition:”the audience members are invited to become the performing agents and move through elements of the original perf, navigating the space between two or more bodies: nursing the challenges of intimacy and detachment”. It’s 10 years since Ian White is gone and this show and trip were a tough and sometimes solitary confrontation with that emptiness. Mat came and brought some sunshine. Met inspiring artists @lukewillisthompson @__peter__robinson__ @maryandbillyapple curator @cameronahloomatamua The question: Do I need territory? As asked by Artspace was a prompt that allowed me to think that maybe I establish the notion of territory through touch and intimacy and exchange, rendering it fluid and boderless. As Audre Lorde put it “In touch with the erotic I become less willing to accept powerlessness”. I did a coupple of artists talks, thanks to @ngvmelbourne @pip_wallis workshop. The show even includes a limited edition perfume made in collaboration with Tash Keddy ‘materialising’ this presence of absence. Big thank you to Anna Kalbhenn @goetheinstitut_neuseeland 🫶🏾 see link in bio

@uralbiennial, a close up of her amazing installation there. Under Amour, an installation of images and performance that I conceived for the circus in yekaterinburg alluding to the absent animals of the circus, these movements based on kung-fu hint towards how martial arts created political solidarity and interracial identification among opressed peoples around the globe. I learnt that apparently Kung-fu was banned by the regime for fear the people may rebel.

Stayed at this beautiful house built by #horracegifford in 1966 known as the Crawford house for @charles.w.andrews 😘 and his partner Jay, the freedom they fought and its force are still very much alive.
