My first concert with the Santa Clarita Symphony! 🎻

Back in August I did what I’d only considered doing for ages (after some light nudging by my friend and violist @sewcorellian) but over which I kept getting cold feet: I finally applied to join the local symphony orchestra, just in time for their new 2026/2027 season. 🎼

This is my first time being part of a full orchestra since my SCVYO & CSUN Youth Philharmonic days, and though as an adult I’ve performed with the Canyon Theatre Guild, a bluegrass band, and many duets and solo work, I always had that itch to be a part of a full orchestra again. But I also knew I’d grown rusty; I hadn’t been practicing anywhere remotely as much as I did every day from 5 to 17. So I worked hard on my seating audition and was surprised and honored to be placed in 1st violin (aside the concertmaster no less), and as I began rehearsing with my fellow musicians in the SCSO, it brought back a joy I haven’t experienced since I was a kid… and I knew I should’ve done this SO much sooner. 😊

Thank you so much to Lisa for convincing me to join (you were so right all along!), we’ve been friends for so long and it’s been a delight to at last collaborate with you as fellow musicians. Thank you to Xaman, our phenomenally talented concertmaster, section leader, and my stand mate; your guidance (and impeccable note-taking) has been so enormously invaluable to me. Thank you to Alex, our brilliant conductor and artistic director, for your passion, patience, and dedication. And of course to every one of our SCSO musicians, staff, and collaborators who make this all possible. 🙏🏼

And last but not least, thank you to my friends and to my parents who’ve supported me and the orchestra on this journey and came to see us perform! I’m so spoiled rotten to have y’all in my life. 🥹

Next up is the Snowfall Spectacular, our winter program concert on December 13th at Saugus High where we’ll be performing the music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, The Nutcracker, and much more. Follow along at @scsorchestra as our season continues… ❄️

Sooo wizard… 🤩

Great times with great friends at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art’s founding member preview! Words can’t describe the beauty of this long-awaited institution, both inside and out. ✨

We kicked things off with an exquisite lunch at @skywalkergrill and perused the gorgeous library before taking the glass Coruscant-style elevators to the main exhibit floor to get just a taste of all the phenomenal galleries the museum has to offer. 🥂

Ultimately we didn’t have anywhere near enough time to take all of the museum’s sights and galleries in, and what little we saw was nothing short of deeply moving. I chose not to spoil here any more than a fraction of what’s on display (outside of the Star Wars gallery at least), which includes a staggering number of world-famous artworks across all mediums, such as originals by Norman Rockwell, Frank Frazetta, Maurice Sendak, Bansky, Charles Schultz, Jack Kirby, and of course Lucasfilm legends like Ralph McQuarrie and Doug Chiang. So much moved me to tears, especially seeing the drawings by my late friend Bernie Wrightson. 🥹

Lastly, while of course there was no way we were gonna miss checking out the Lucas Museum when it finally opened this month, my dear friend @alicecirvin & I, who both share mid-September birthdays (and today is her actual birthday!), always figured our first visit would be to jointly celebrate. Thanks to her and Ron our private party got to preview the museum a little early, and I couldn’t imagine a more unforgettable way to ring in another year together. 🥳

I may be biased as one of her grandchildren, but I genuinely can’t think of anyone I’ve met in my life who’s more selfless than my 할머니. No one prioritized the welfare of everyone else around her more than she did, even to a fault. Every extended family dinner growing up seemed to inevitably lead to heated arguments with our parents/aunts/uncles over how she’d always try to give her own portion of food away to the rest of us, always asking if we’re eating enough. She would’ve literally starved to make sure we had our fill. She taught us the meaning of kindness and generosity.

I can’t even begin to understand the hardships she faced raising four kids (after losing a firstborn in infancy) as a poor single parent following the sudden death of her husband at 38, through a World War and the Korean Civil War no less. And how blessed we all are today that she and her family pulled through such uncertain times to go on and thrive today in both Korea and the United States. Thanks to her endurance, none of us faced the hardships that she did.

And how blessed we were to have her in our lives for so long, healthy and vibrant into her final days. I won’t forget the last time I saw her, earlier this year for her 100th birthday. Though she had forgotten why so many of her family were visiting that day (her memory had gradually begun to escape her), she was just delighted we were there, regardless of the reason. She still lit up at the sight of me, carefully recalled my name 상혁, and kept repeating it as she clutched my hand so tenderly to her face. I can only hope to live a life deserving of her love.

Today, her ashes were scattered to the Pacific. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
