🐿️ 🌰 Spring we gathered to learn and process, in preparation for autumn’s bounty. This year the oaks are pumping and there’s flour to be made!! Acorns hold stories, they hold nourishment and a food shed for the critters amongst the hills. Bryan shares his dedicated knowledge and passion for this craft in his home tucked in the blue ridge mountains outside of Asheville, NC. Now that autumn is here this knowledge roots us into action for ancestral food stores that will keep us fed through the winter.

After some hours of good honest work we were treated to a parting snack of acorn soup, acorn crackers + cookies and ginger beer that satiated us all.

Head over to Bryan @healingecosystems and Lorenzo @lorenzo__cooks for more info on their upcoming online class on - October 26 - all about acorns and slow food. There will also be a recording of the class that will go out to every one who signs up, whether or not you can make it LIVE!! 🍂 Hosted by @cookforagefeast

The first Autumn Blooms Native Plants Festival was a success! Thank you to all who came out to support local vendors here at the farm.

Native plants are sustainable, save water, and provide habitat for pollinators. Thank you @healingecosystems and @dragonflymagicnatives for the education and amazing selection of natives for all to plant!

It's literally astounding how food grows naturally without our human doing. We cultivate many plants that have healing properties AND we value what grows native and wild.
.
Western North Carolina has it all. Thank you and blessings to all the native indigenous peoples past and present.

Fall is kicking into high gear these days.

We just staked in the skeleton of our remay garden cloths to protect plants like the lettuces from frost.

The Hopey corn is on its 5th week of drying. 🤤 Bring on the cornbread.

@bryantonio our farm manager is always slinging some knowledge. He is pictured harvesting the first lettuce leaf of the season.

And Mark is grinning holding a gourd or pumpkin of some sort. 🎃

We planted a 12 acre food forest!
🌱
Holy smokes, y’all. We did it!
Thanks to many helping hands, we established a diverse matrix of 1500 trees & shrubs on the farm in less than one week.
🌱
It was a truly a joyful & smooth process thanks to lots of planning, perfect weather, and the support of our community- a precious time in our lives we’ll never forget.
🌱
Now, we wait & watch & rest.

-your tired & happy farmers,
Lyric & Noah

"Mushroom hunts are such lessons and here’s a quick story to illustrate: Ben, Link and I were hunting chanterelles and candy caps with little success for the first part of the day. We took a break to have some snacks and try some of Link’s reishi-infused honey that he’s been making. We were enjoying the honey and sharing snacks when Ben, being the expert mushroom hunter he is, noticed a golden flicker below his feet. There it was - our first chanterelle of the day - and we weren’t even trying. Then he spotted another and another and before we knew it, we were scouring the hillside and found a few pounds. Mushroom hunting be like that - slowing down, relaxing, letting them come to you, then making slow concerted effort to find more - that’s how it’s done.
🍄
California winter mushroom hunting was one of my highlights of visiting the west coast for the first time since I moved over 2 years ago. Me and Ben hauled in a lot of black trumpets up north and some candy caps and chanterelles here and there. We also found a couple of pig’s ear (Gomphus clavatus) which were a new one for me to try eating. It’s a chanterelle relative and has a great texture and taste, albeit prone to bug infestations.
My chanterelle spots all produced some decent flushes and nothing compares to the enormous California chanterelles. I got to pass on a spot to my dear friend @nichellesummerz too.
Funny enough, I found more black trumpets in North Carolina this past summer than anything else and the black trumpet abundance continued on this west coast trip.
🍄
No matter what you do or don’t find, it’s usually a blast getting into the dank forests to hunt mushrooms, especially with good friends. But I gotta admit it’s a big bonus when you find some delicious mushrooms too." - Bryan from @healingecosystems
Shoutouts to @stillbennyfromthablock @linkzampino & Link’s company @myco_medicinals
