Cosmic Whirlpool 🌌

The Whirlpool Galaxy is one of the most popular galaxies in the night sky, and it’s easy to see why. Its massive spiral arms and close companion galaxy make for a beautiful image and a stunning view at the eyepiece.

Astrophotographer Brian Sams did an excellent job revealing the glowing hydrogen and star-forming regions, pulling out some incredible detail in the galaxy’s arms! Swipe to see Brian's setup for this shot, and follow @bsastro85 for more gorgeous views! 🔭 ✨

The Sun in Hydrogen Alpha 🌞

During the Dutch National Solar Observation Day on July 5, fellow astrophotographer and chairman of Stichting Sterrenwacht Saturnus, Paul Volman, suggested that we take advantage of the next sunny day to photograph the sun with the observatory's Coronado SolarMax 60mm telescope. Astrophotographer Mark Bossen and I immediately loved the idea. All we had to do was wait for a sunny Saturday afternoon, and as luck would have it, the focast was great for next weekend!

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 2:00 PM, the time had come. Mark, Paul, Hans, and I were ready with the Coronado telescope and two cameras. The observatory's Player One cooled mono camera and my own ZWO ASI224MC. Our solar expert, Paul, who has been photographing the Sun since 2011, explained how to use the telescope and shared the techniques needed to capture detailed solar images.

Thanks to Paul's guidance, we managed to capture this image, showing not only the Sun's surface with a lot detail but also the prominences extending beyond the solar limb. A huge thank you to Paul for an enjoyable and educational day. This is definitely something we'll be doing again!

One dataset, 5 completely different visions.

SP_0166 — 43 hours under Chilean skies was this month's exclusive drop for @picastroapp Titan members. Look what the community did with the exact same masters!

Featured: @tryggvedyrvik · @astromiri1980 · @jans_nightsky_astrophotography · @bsastro85

Two ways to get your hands on data like this:

→ @picastroapp Titan — a new exclusive dataset every month, first.

→ spacetimepictures.com Pass — a new master, every single day.

However you process, the data's waiting. Tag us in your edits and we'll reshare! Cheers :)

+++++PICASTRO IMAGES OF THE WEEK+++++

OK, these are going to blow your mind and are truly worthy winners this week. We’re sure you’ll agree!!

1st place going to this incredible image from Nick F. A stunningly detailed of 36Cam, and yeah we hadn’t heard of this one before either. A K-type star in Camelopardalis. Check out the fine details in this one. Incredible work Nick.

2nd place going to another absolutely stunning image from Azhar R and an image taken from Martin Pugh Astrophotography’s remote setup. It’s SH2-63, sometimes called the Galactic Surfer!

3rd place going to Brian for his processing of the monthly free dataset that Picastro Titan users get for FREE from @spacetime.pictures Beautifully crafted and executed image of the Wolf nebula. Check out the details in this one.

Incredibly well done on these images, chaps.

Remember if you sign up for a Picastro Titan plan you’ll get a FREE monthly dataset from @spacetime.pictures

See you there.

Globular Clusters of the Messier Catalog✨

I’ve been working on photographing the entire Messier Catalog for about a year now as a major project. Before finishing it, I wanted to create a couple of collages showcasing the different types of objects it contains. This is my second collage, featuring every globular cluster in the catalog.

Some of them may look tiny, but that’s because I’m capturing them from the Netherlands. A few of these clusters never rise very high above the horizon here, and some were so low that I was simply happy to capture them at all! In a few of the subs, I could even see houses 😂.bI've also included an image showing what it was like to capture some of these. My telescope was literally pointing almost straight at the horizon!

One day I’d like to revisit the lowest targets from a location farther south in Europe!
