⏰On Tuesday, October 27, nearly 1,000 high school students from all over Austin will descend on Barton Springs for a day of discovery and hands-on environmental education, bringing students face-to-face with the science, people, and places shaping Central Texas. Students will explore everything from cave dye tracing and hydrogeology to native tree planting, biodiversity, and the underground connections that keep our springs flowing. They’ll learn alongside organizations and experts including TreeFolks, Symbiosis TX, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Austin Water, Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, and SOOO many more.

Here’s where you come in! 🙌 Whether you’re a longtime BSU volunteer or joining us for the first time, we have a place for you. Help set up, guide students between activities, or keep the day’s magic moving behind the scenes.

💚 Every volunteer makes an enormous difference. We’ll provide Tacodeli lunch and a BSU T-shirt + a front-row seat to this landmark day.

From April to July we experienced consistent rain with even some major flooding that devestated many areas throughout the Texas Hill Country. With our lakes filling up it seems like we are in a great place with our water. But what we see on the surface is not the same story for our groundwater.

Although that summer rain was a big help, it did not fix our groundwater issue with many district still having restrictions due to depleting wells. Let’s conserve what we can as the rest of the year is unlikely going to be a wet one!

Has recent rain helped Barton Springs? We asked Shay Hlavaty, communications and outreach manager for the Barton Springs-Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, where we stand with water flow and drought.

After the April rain, the flow increased to more than 20 cubic feet per second, which is below the average of 60 cfs. Hlavaty said the springs have a long way to go before conditions improve.

Just a reminder that we’ll be tabling with other rainwater companies next Tuesday to share how you can integrate harvesting into your home! No matter what your limitations may be- budget, space, regulations, etc., you can capture and utilize rainwater in some capacity. @bseacd is hosting this FREE event to help increase awareness and access in our community. 💧 Hays County wells are at 20-year lows. Here's what's happening.

In late February, Hays County considered a moratorium on new high-water-use development permits — including data centers. The vote was tabled after legal questions came up about whether the county even has the authority to issue one under current Texas law.
State Rep. Erin Zwiener (HD-45, which covers Dripping Springs) has since formed a working group to dig into exactly that question. The group includes the Barton Springs-Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, the Wimberley Valley Watershed Association, the San Marcos River Foundation, and Hays County Commissioners Ingalsbe and Hammer.

No recommendations have been issued yet — this is early. But the questions they're trying to answer matter for everyone on a well in this area:
— What authority do counties actually have over large-scale water users outside city limits?
— What does the current regulatory landscape look like?
— What policy tools could other Texas counties use if facing similar situations?

The aquifers that supply residential wells don't stop at city boundaries. Regional groundwater conditions affect Dripping Springs whether or not anything gets built inside city limits.
We'll keep covering this as it develops.

Hays County is often the tip of the spear when it comes to new challenges related to development, water, and local control. The challenges posed by the current data center rush are no exception.

Today, I'm announcing the formation of a Hays County working group to generate solutions to these challenges, and I'm so grateful to all the talented, hardworking, and wise individuals who have agreed to contribute their time and their expertise.

Together, we can find solutions at both the local and state level to empower our communities, to encourage wise growth, and to protect our water resources for generations to come.

Join us for two days of art and interdisciplinary dialogue.

TODAY: Artist talks in ART 1.120 at 2:30 PM, featuring Abby Flanagan (To Move Through Stone) and Francesca Lally (Half Time). Abby will discuss place-based practice, followed by Francesca’s exploration of the future ruins of Texas football stadiums. Q&A to follow each session.

TOMORROW: Edwards Aquifer panel and publication launch at 12 PM, featuring a cross-disciplinary conversation on art and the Edwards Aquifer, with a focus on storytelling, conservation, and visual representation. The event will include a panel of artists, scholars, and scientists. Lunch will be provided. RSVP required.

Take a hike…with the VAC and conservationist Shay Hlavaty this Saturday at 10:30 AM. We’re meeting at the Violet Crown Trailhead to start a two-mile loop around Barton Springs, learning along the way about how the Edwards Aquifer feeds Austin’s most famous natural destination.

This program is held in conjunction with our current exhibition “Abby Flanagan: To Move Through Stone,” on view through March 21, and is supported by The Texas Commission on the Arts.❤️
