🌿 DAY 1 – THE POWER OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN NIGERIA'S HEALTH SECTOR
Biotechnology & Health in Nigeria: A 7-Day Journey
Presented by Sct. OPEYEMI JOHN

For years, Nigeria has battled persistent health crises malaria, sickle cell, TB, HIV/AIDS, cancer, and now antibiotic resistance. But there’s a silent revolution growing… and it’s called Biotechnology.

🧬 Biotechnology is the use of living systems, cells, and molecular tools to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. It powers:
✅ Genetically engineered vaccines
✅ Precision diagnostics
✅ Gene therapy for inherited disorders
✅ Monoclonal antibodies and recombinant drugs
✅ Biofortified foods and nutritional genomics

In a continent where access to healthcare remains unequal and late diagnosis is the norm, biotechnology offers Nigeria a chance to leap ahead, not catch up.

🔬 This week, I’ll be unveiling:

🔍 The diseases affecting millions of Nigerians

🧪 Biotech tools that can solve them

🧠 How we can build local capacity for sustainable solutions

🔍 Why Nigeria? Why Now?
Nigeria, with over 200 million people, faces a complex health burden worsened by:

Poor infrastructure and late diagnosis

Low access to affordable treatment

Lack of local drug production

Limited awareness of biotech potentials

But the good news is that we can change this through education, innovation, and application of biotechnology tailored to our local context.

NOTE:
This is more than a 7-day series,it's a call to raise awareness, promote innovation, and drive change in how we approach health in Nigeria.
As a biotechnologist, this is my commitment to my profession and to the people.
This isn’t just a campaign but a movement. As a Biotechnologist, I believe science must serve the people.

💬 Engage. Share. Learn.

📌 Join me tomorrow (Day 2) as we explore how biotech is battling infectious diseases like malaria, Lassa fever, TB, and HIV/AIDS.

On January 23rd, 2025, the National Association of Life Science Students (NALSS) Officials, led by the President, Comrade Habefe, alongside other officials from the Executive and Parliament arms, joined forces to support the host of the NALSS 2024/2025 Fresher's Orientation, Comrade K-Mama, the Vice President of NALSS.

In attendance were esteemed Faculty Officials, including the Dean, School of Life Sciences, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Professor M.O. Ashamo; Heads of Departments - Professor A.C. Akinmoladun (Biochemistry), Professor J.O. Akinneye (Biology), Professor D.J. Arotupin (Microbiology), and Professor Fagbenro (Biotechnology) - who was represented; the Sub-Dean, Dr. Agunloye; the SLS School Officer; and the ever-supportive Staff Adviser of NALSS, FUTA Chapter, Professor O.A. Alabi.

Student leaders, both erstwhile and current, from various arms of the FUTA Student Union (FUTASU), NALSS, and departmental associations, were present along with an alumnus of the association.

Together, we welcomed the fresh students into our esteemed institution, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), and our prestigious Faculty of Life Sciences. The students were oriented and enlightened on how to achieve academic success in their undergraduate careers and navigate leadership in FUTA.

Indeed, it was a memorable event.
