I posted the benches from Burning Man ‘25, now here’s the bullshit. Getting film developed after almost 2 whirlwind weeks in the desert is always a trip. I remember all of it and nothing at the same time.

The Animal Bench was the one bench we knew we needed to build for our “Tim’s Bench” project. We didn’t know what kind of animal it would be, but it was directly inspired by the infamous Animal Bikes my Dad built - which brought joy to many people for many years. As soon as we were awarded the Honoraria Grant from @burningman we began our search for the right stuffed animal.

@caitran and I had a vision for how we wanted the bench to look. Marketplace was fruitful, we ended up with many large stuffed animals to work with. We chose a gigantic bear that @audreyobscura found, then vacuum-sealed into a small bag for transport to our build days in the forest. My Dad’s sister, Terry, took the reins on this sewing project and, with the help of many hands, stuffed this animal around a wooden bench frame. It was our comfiest bench, with a padded seat and natural headrest. Inside the bear’s head we placed a photo of one of my Dad’s Animal Bikes, and a button that said his name.

The Animal Bench was probably our most popular on playa. Almost every time we visited the benches, someone was lying on it. People shared their stories of needing a place to sleep for a minute on their way back to camp, or coming out with coffee to lay and watch the sunrise. This was exactly our intention: providing a comfortable place for people to rest.

After the nasty 70mph windstorm before gates opened, followed by days of rain, we were unsure how the Animal Bench would hold up in the elements, but she did great! We used an air blower, dusted it off, and it remained soft and comfortable for the rest of the week. Ohhh the stories that bear could tell...

My Dad would have loved watching everyone interact with it. It was fun and playful, just like Burning Man. There was even a surprise squeaker toy in the tail for those who found it. I didn’t expect it to be the crowd favorite, but I’m glad it was, as it was the most “Tim” of our designs. The bench fit perfectly in the back of my Dad’s green van, which is how I drove it to and from Black Rock City - it just felt right.

These photos and more from our build and install on playa can be seen at timsbench.com 💚

We knew “Tim’s Bench” was going to be more than one bench. We wanted each to represent something different about our Dad. The Green Bench was the first, and maybe only one of the three, that we had a clear picture from the start of what it was going to look like. @gogrey had built a similar, smaller bench for our house, so we beefed up the design and made a bench meant to stand strong in the elements of the Black Rock Desert.

This bench was sturdy, built to seat at least 6, but I think we got 13 people on it at one point? It was painted to match my Dad’s Green Van, and had a mailbox for people to leave and take things. Checking the mailbox throughout the week was one of our favorite parts of visiting the bench. We left stickers, buttons, and charm bracelets, and in return we received snacks, trinkets, and notes. Some from people who knew our Dad, but most from strangers just passing by, enjoying a place to sit, and a mailbox in the middle of the desert to interact with.

On Saturday night we hosted a toasting event at the benches. We brought bubbly beverages, and enjoyed the sunset. We made Toasts to Tim, and toasts to other’s loved ones. It was special, and the whole time I kept thinking about how much my Dad would have loved to be there - watching the playa come alive and fill up with blinky lights from everyone heading out for the night. We left our bikes and cooler at the benches to watch the burn, and when we returned the unopened bottle of champagne we left was gone. We were actually pleased to see it, and hope whoever took it enjoyed the bubbles for the big party. A gift from Tim!

The bench was meant to be written on, but since we didn’t start it, nobody really followed. The mailbox, however, got covered in stickers - one I didn’t find until we were deinstalling the benches, it read “Keep Making Shitty Art.” And you know what? We will! I took this as a compliment. People hear Burning Man Art and think huge sculptures, flaming art, BIG. What we provided was small, and useful. This was just a bench, a big green one. We loved our “shitty art” and left feeling inspired to keep bringing helpful, supportive Art to the playa. 💚
