With the airing of Mike Flanagan’s CARRIE this week, I’m reflecting on our 2023 production and how it was perhaps the most significant catalyst of my inspiration and process as a director.

I’ve had some incredible collaborators throughout my career, but there was something special about working with Kylan, Andrew, Angela, Ella, and Emma on this particular show.

Kylan created organic, raw choreography that perfectly mirrored each character’s internal feelings and made the magic seem alive.

Angela and I worked in tandem to create a color theory for each character’s costume, designing the color scheme to match their internal motivations and for some of them, morph throughout the show to reveal their development.

Emma shot portraits that made these characters feel unnerving and creepy, yet still childish and real. The way she captured the production photos makes every scene seem visceral, pulsing with life.

We experimented with creating stage blood, and Ella was instrumental in making sure the actors and set were kept safe, clean, and informed about how, when, and how much blood would be used in a scene.

We learned that less is more, when it comes to that particular recipe, and stored the fake liquid in a tumbler… one I recently discovered in my guest room closet and was too afraid to open, knowing it was going to be totally rotten.

Andrew designed a vivid yet minimal set, illuminated by bright LEDS that created soft, terrifying, or electric moments.

This is a practical effect!
