The night before an eating contest, I rest my mind and digestive tract as I expect them each to process an ungodly amount of matter the following day. For this year’s Buffalo Wing Eating Championship, I deviated quite far from my usual calm and emptying preparation by actually competing in ANOTHER eating contest: The Buffalo Buffet Bowl! Competitors are each given a tray filled with 5lbs of “Buffalonian staples.” Last year’s bowls contained pizza, beef of weck, boneless buffalo wings, and meatballs. The first eater to finish the entirety of their bowl wins. After fourth place has been called, the rest of the eaters must stop and their placements are determined by the weight of food remaining.

On contest day, I stepped up to the stage excited yet apprehensive about feasting on so much greasy food literally less than 24 hours before the wing eating contest. My overall hunger and eagerness took over though. I felt ready for this contest and reminded myself “it’s only 5lbs of food….” Well, after every eater took their place and got set up, the Wing King made a surprise announcement. For the 25th anniversary of the festival, this year’s bowl would contain SIX pounds of food! It included pepperoni pizza from Bocce’s, beef on weck provided by Charlie the Butcher, Springer Mountain Farms chicken nuggets, and Wardynski polish sausages. Feeling a tad blindsided, these last minute swaps frustrated me, but my inner competitor found thrill and excitement from something unexpected. With the countdown already underway, there was no turning back… I would have to dial in do my best with what I was given.

In the end, I only consumed 4.72lbs of my Buffalo Bowl to earn 6th place overall. Huge shout out to the MLE fam at the this year’s contest for handling our sudden rule changes and food swaps with poise and professionalism.
