Welcome week is officially over and our painters are hard at work already. Here are a few things we’ve been working on this week!

Our first years had their first workshop in their new studios!

Some drawings from Michelle’s class in our main first year room.

Our second and third years’ canvases have come out of storage ready for the year!

Putting together stretchers for new work!

Returning students have been busy making new paintings! Here is the first of many by @bug_with_a_brush

Our lovely Freelands Fellow @alicecampbellart held her first open studio of the year! A great chance to show students the work she’s made so far during her residency for the Freelands Foundation.

Some of Alice’s studio work!

More of Alice’s drawings. Alice will also be running workshops over the next few weeks.

Setting up the studio walls!

And finally, taking out all of their materials from storage.

Meet the artist - Toni Leeson! (@bug_with_a_brush)

“I tend to become obsessed with certain objects, patterns or figures and love to use my paint to distort them all together. I would describe myself as a mixed media artist as I love to explore the limitations of cheaper or natural materials. Creating isn’t a choice for me, it’s a need, a craving to try and communicate the things I can’t explain within myself and the world. I used to draw all over the walls as a child. I often paint on top of my work over and over to blend old and new ideas, I like to play so I don’t overthink my line work too much. I am very interested in the concept of the muse and how subjects relate to the people who draw them. I would love everyone to realise they can be an artist, all they need is the desire to make.”

Come to see our second year show, “Miscellanea” to see Toni’s work and more.
