Shadows - A series by me for @aimnorth Episode one - Mike Humphreys.

More of these soon but for now, all eyes on @mikeyhumph who today began his attempt to run the entire length of an entire continent for Motor Neurone Disease. I shot this with Mike on one of his training runs at 5am in the Peak District back in January. We’d had about three hours sleep, it was freezing cold, very wet and very, very windy. None of which bothered Mike in the slightest.

The goal of the Shadows series was to show obsession and drive on screen in its very rawest form. To highlight the work that happens out of the spotlight and dive into how and why athletes push themselves far, far beyond the reasonable. Mike embodies that more than anyone I think I’ve ever met. Over the next year, @olifitzer and I are hunting out more individuals like Mike for the Shadows series. We’ve got a couple in the bag already. Look forward to sharing those soon.

Visually these films are inspired by the work of photographer Roy DeCarava, where images are deliberately darker, given away less freely and made to be sat with rather than skimmed past. The anti algorithm films no one asked for…!
