Swipe to see the startup building a robot for custom supplement formulas. Factories are built to make the same product repeatedly. Switching products can mean stopping the line, changing equipment, cleaning, and checking everything again. CLD-9 is tackling that challenge with supplements. The company says its robot can weigh, mix, and seal personalized formulas, making a different blend on each run. The idea: make individual orders practical to manufacture, even when everyone wants something different. Source: CLD-9. Swipe to see the bottleneck slowing down every AI drug company. AI can now design a new drug candidate in a matter of days. Generative models propose thousands of new molecules in hours, and the design side has gotten dramatically faster. The making side hasn't moved at nearly the same pace. Physical production is the bottleneck almost nobody talks about. Someone still has to make each compound one at a time, and a single one can take up to six months to produce by hand. Design got fast, manufacturing stayed slow, and that gap is where the whole process now stalls. CLD-9, built a robot aimed at the manufacturing half. It makes a different formulation on every run, with no batch and no minimum order, dosing for one person at the point of manufacture. It runs on supplements today, with liquids in development and a future machine aimed at compounding and drug research, so the medicine side is a stated goal rather than something available now. Swipe to see the robot building a different supplement for every single person. The biggest names in consumer goods are suddenly spending billions on personalized supplements. This year alone, P&G agreed to buy Thorne for $3.8 billion, Herbalife acquired Bioniq, and Unilever bought Grüns. Everyone wants to sell a supplement built for one person instead of one product for the whole shelf. But there's a reason nobody has cracked it. Bayer bought Care/of, the best-known personalized vitamin brand, then shut it down in 2024 and cut all 143 jobs. The promise was real; assembling every order by hand is what broke the economics. That's the problem CLD-9 built a machine for. Its robotic platform, Nexus, manufactures each order from its own fresh digital formula, no big batch runs, with every box coming out different from the one before it. It's the only company that can do per-order formulation at this scale. So far it has manufactured over 24,000 personalized servings, built by a founder who started after watching his family struggle to find the right supplements for his sister. Khushang Hirpara didn’t start in a lab or a boardroom. He started in a crowded campus gym, answering the same question from 250 athletes who were just as confused about supplements as he was. He grew up in Seattle wanting a stable path but chose the harder one. At 22, while most people were still figuring life out, he was grinding through 10,000 prototypes, blown budgets, and nights that felt longer than his courage. That struggle turned into Cloud9, a system that can create 28 million personalised formulas and build each one down to the milligram. His breakthrough wasn’t luck. It was relentless curiosity and a refusal to accept that “one-size-fits-all” was the best the world could offer. Today, he’s not just building a product. He’s building a future where wellness finally fits the person. Discover more about Khushang Hirpara in this Global Indian piece.
