CAN WE PLANT MORE TREES IN OUR CITIES?

I’ve been looking at old photos recently and came across one that caught my attention: it’s a picture of me standing behind the only big tree in a vast, empty field. The sight was breathtaking—this massive tree was not just an eye candy in the empty lot, animals would flock to it for shelter.

Recently, I hiked and biked through the Sierra Madre, surrounded by lush, beautiful trees, and I couldn’t help but compare it to the heat and discomfort of walking around Metro Manila. The lack of trees here, combined with the heat from the pavement and the smoke from cars, makes it unbearable to even stay outside for just a short period of time. We need more trees.

This is a simple post with a simple story to remind everyone how important trees are—and that we need them. I hope that we can all do our part, even in small ways, to raise awareness about how trees are essential for making our world a more livable place.

Join Jilson Tiu and the Pulitzer Center in their #ShowMeYourTreePH campaign to showcase the importance of trees. Share your tree stories through photos or reels. The best story will win $500 USD.

To enter, upload a post (either photos or a video) on Instagram with a caption that shares your personal story about trees and their importance. Make sure to mention one fact you learned about deforestation from the Pulitzer Center. You can explore more using the link in the bio.

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #ShowMeYourTreePH and tag the following accounts: @jilson.tiu, @pulitzercenter, @bujibabiera, @higadpating, and @greenpeaceph.

The deadline for entries is December 26, 2024. Share your story and become a tree advocate. Your simple post can make a difference, one story at a time.
