“You’re limited by the length of the wires but there’s something I need to tell you” — Karina Scott for The final installment of my magazine, Asphalt & Attitude available to purchase on Blurb in ebook and physical (in my b1o). Thank you to everyone who participated in this journey and I’m so glad to have made and reinforced my connections in this city that I’m still setting in to. All models’ tags 4th and 5th to the last slide. 🛝

Thank you for coming in this journey, Asphalt & Attitude (pt. 3, End)

Cosplayers became a major player in this work. They are artists and craftsmen in their own right, often creating entire looks from scratch on a time crunch. This project, in part, looks at how art is distanced from craft and fashion. Asphalt & Attitude works to place all three together in one compressive—but fun and digestible—omnibus.

As a cosplayer myself, I am immersed in this atmosphere more and more often now that I’ve moved to NYC. There is so much to do here, events and opportunities to dress up for nearly every night (I was recently invited to two events on Thursdays (?)). This niche community in Michigan has less than a quarter of the opportunities I’ve encountered here, and Detroit is not a tiny city. This in particular, I find very interesting and unique to New York, making it a perfect topic for my already unusual exploration this semester.

My project was centered from the start around something I thought was distinctive: the projected signs and ads from spotlights outside of restaurants, bars, and stores. Besides the bright lights being beautiful, these were something I haven’t encountered in other places I’ve traveled. They’re everywhere here! It felt natural to connect this aspect of nightlife with the cosplay functions I was attending. Part of why I’m so deep in the community now is because I was seeking out these experiences for the magazine. I’ve found new friends and acquaintances and have even been hired several times to photograph cosplay-related shinannigas!

In the end, this magazine actually had a huge impact on my personal and professional life and I’m very thankful that my lack of design experience was made up for with passion and determination.

Cheers to Asphalt & Attitude (pt. 2)
