One of the best things I did for my marriage was download Bumble.

Not because my husband wasn’t enough.

Not because I was looking for someone else.

Because I needed friends.

Five years ago, I moved to the UK.
I left behind my family, my friends, my support system, and all the people who knew me before I became someone’s wife, someone’s colleague, or someone’s mum.
And if you’ve ever moved countries, you’ll know this feeling.

You’re surrounded by people.
But you’re completely alone.

Making friends as an adult is HARD.

Making friends as an adult in a new country feels almost impossible.

So I did something that felt incredibly awkward.

I downloaded @bumble for friends (it was Bumble BFF at the time)

I swiped through profiles.
I messaged strangers.
I went on coffee dates that felt suspiciously like first dates.

Some were awkward.
Some went nowhere.

But some of those strangers became some of my closest friends.

The people who celebrated my wins.
Checked in when I became a new mum.
Turned up when life got hard.
And helped make a foreign country feel like home.

We talk a lot about dating when we move somewhere new.

We don’t talk enough about friendship.

But friendship is what makes a city feel like home.
Friendship is what gets you through motherhood.
Friendship is what helps you survive starting over.

So if you’ve recently moved abroad, moved cities, become a new mum, or you’re struggling to find your people…

This is your sign to send that message.
Go to the coffee.
Put yourself out there.

Because the friendship you’re looking for might be one awkward conversation away. ❤️
